AS i suspected Yankee pitching is going to be a problem. I am loving the Castro pickup even more than a did a few weeks ago!

Castro is a solid player and I'm glad to see him remaining successful. He gave the Cubs some good years and moments.

I really respect the way Castro handled himself last year, and I'll always appreciate him for being a bright spot in our line up when we were awful. He received a lot of undue criticism. Some of it was justified, but he came into the league as a 20yo kid and the team was terrible. Of course he made mistakes, but he became an easy target during a rebuilding phase.

With all that said, Hoops, let Castro play two full seasons before you make your final conclusion on how much you love the trade. He is like the Giants; great in even number years, below average in odd number years. If he puts it all together, you got a really solid player.

200 hits in his first full year in the big leagues as a 21 yo was impressive. So many managers throughout the years really messed with him. I know Dale Sveum has a good reputation as a hitting coach, but Castro tried to pull everything in 2013. I never understood his approach while Sveum was there.

2016 MLB Thread - B_Hawk06 - 04-08-2016 03:55 PM

Sveum was dumpster fire.

Schwarber with torn ACL and LCL and out for the season, obviously. The Cubs are deep and have a lot of redundant pieces (good job Theo), but this still hurts. It's a big left-handed bat out of the middle of the line-up, it takes away a huge trade-deadline piece (Schwarber or Soler), and it probably prevents him from ever catching (although, Chicago wasn't counting on him a catcher).

Biggest blow for Chicago is deadline deal for another TOR arm, IMO.

2016 MLB Thread - B_Hawk06 - 04-08-2016 08:48 PM

That hurts bad man. I don't think they'd ever trade Schwarbs, but possibly Soler.

Hopefully he can rehab from this and be back next season. His bat missing in the lineup is gonna hurt short term, buts early in the season and the Cubbies can work around it. They still have a lot of talent.

Makes Theo look like a genius for not trading Soler. I agree Bricks obviously I'm not putting his number in monument park after only 4 games especially since that SOB went 0-4 yesterday (what a chump, haha I kid). Something I saw in ST was he seemed to played with a looseness we haven't seen from him since he first came up. Seems kind of crazy to say someone would go to NY to get rid of pressure doesn't it?

Tough night for Hatch. Not only gave up the no-hitter but Stripling ended up with a no-decision, and the Dodgers lost the game to boot.

It wasn't an unjustified move for Roberts to pull Stripling from the game, either. Kid was coming off Tommy John and hadn't pitched since 2014. He's hit the 100-pitch mark and Roberts wanted to avoid Johan Santana-ing the kid at 26 years old and in the first week of the season.

Saw that. Sucks for Hatcher, but he'll bounce back.

The rookie even said the coach made the right decision to the media and in a personal meeting with the coach before the game ended in the coach's office (he had been ejected).

I just king for the day when pitchers were not a bunch of coddled pansies!!!

Jake Arrieta is good at baseball. In his last 24 regular season starts he's gone 20-1, 0.086 ERA, 178 IP, 91 HITS, 173/33 K/BB, 0.697 WHIP. His one loss during that stretch was when the Cubs were no-hit by Cole Hamels. Cubs are fun to watch this year.

Crazy good. I'm kicking myself for reading to much into playoffs and a rough ST and not drafting him again!

And to think he was a high prospect for the Orioles and once he made it to the show was nothing more than just average. Then he left and became amazing. I swear pitchers are made to not perform in Baltimore, with the last one really being Mussina.

One of the many interesting facts I saw last night regarding Arrieta was that on April 21st, 2013 he gave up 5 runs a 7-4 loss for Baltimore and was demoted to minors next day.

RE: 2016 MLB Thread - Seahawk Nation 08 - 04-22-2016 10:29 AM

Cubs used advanced analytics to determine Arrieta was a "diamond in the rough". His standard numbers were weak in Baltimore, but some of the other numbers they looked at suggested the Orioles had simply used him incorrectly (like failing to let him use his sinker, changeup and slider). Their philosophy has centered on drafting hitters and getting creative when acquiring pitchers. Impressive stuff.

Yup. Even in Baltimore you thought he had it because he would have good outings then bad. He was just very inconsistent, which is ironic now with just how consistent he is. They also had a pitching coach realize his mechanics were off too and corrected that, which utilized his skill set.

They've drafted hitters early in the draft, but I think Theo understands how unpredictable pitching can be. In the last two drafts, he's taken Schwarber and Ian Happ first overall, but 14 of the 20 top picks in 2014 and 2015 were pitchers.

I believe their advanced analytics helped them make decisions on guys like Andrew Cashner, Matt Garza and Jeff Samardzija. They've drafted well, but where would they be without Rizzo and Russell...plus getting Fowler for Luis Valbuena.
