2017 Football Recruits - vaguy67 - 07-27-2015 10:17 AM

When is too soon too soon?

Attended a family gathering over the weekend. A son of my wife's cousin is a rising junior QB for a VA. high school. The high school regularly is a power house in Central VA. I wondered why he was not in attendance and was told he was at Delaware for an unofficial visit. He has also been to Tennessee and Wake Forest. What on earth is going on?

In addition, my brother-in-law also told me that a 10th grader at the same high school and already received offers from Virginia and another ACC college. I have a hard time believing that one, just wondering if this is really going on?

This is a topic always up for debate. But yes, it happens. There are instances of 8th graders committing to favorite schools. These rarely work out as kids don't continue to develop, stop growing, or are surpassed by their peers and a kid is encouraged to go elsewhere. I think it's more of a recruiting tool to show that a school was there with you from the start. But, it's so easy for either side to get out that it means little.

A smart recruit shouldn't be concerned with who offered first. They should look for the school that fits them academically, geographically, and athletically. It's easy for these kids to get caught up in the excitement though.

Marcus noted that this was a major reason for his commitment to W&M. He said he felt like we were there early, before he blew up and started to receive offers from "major" programs. I think a school like W&M would do well to show interest by the 10th grade and use the "we liked you way back when" to repel offers from well-established basketball schools.

I really like Ryan Lezzer's highlights. Very fluid and explosive on offense and defense.

He's got options. Maryland offered him right before us. The lure of the Big 10 is tough to overcome.

The three-star recruit is ranked as the nation’s No. 17 dual-threat quarterback by 247Sports.com Composite Rankings.
Mitchell, who has three offers, said William & Mary leads. He’s also hearing from Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Crystal Ball reads 40-percent or Nebraska, 40-percent for Virginia Tech and 20-percent foggy.

More on Mitchell: http://maryland.247sports.com/Article/Where-are-the-top-recruits-in-the-Tidewater-Region-leaning-44923256

Quarterback Shon Mitchell, the nation’s No. 12 dual-threat quarterback by 247Sports, favors William & Mary after Virginia Tech filled up at his position and Wake Forest opted to go in a different direction.

Mitchell, who led his team to the state title game twice, has put up gaudy numbers as a three-year starter throwing for over 8,225 yards and 100 touchdowns.

Mitchell (5-11, 175), with a 3.8 GPA, is drawing interest from FAU, FIU, SMU and Memphis. He’s going to see who all offers this spring before making his college choice.

Scout has Mitchell as the #2 QB in the state and #5 in the east.
Finished junior year as the #8 passer in VHSL history, and on pace to overtake # 1 Philip Sims.

Great article with some insight on the recruiting efforts going towards the 2017 class. Great reading the quotes from the recruits.

http://www.herosports.com/news/ncaa-fcs-mens-football/fcs-recruiting-william-mary-staff-keeping-collective-poker-face-on-but-the-plan-is-in-place

I don't know a lot about all of the mentioned recruits, but two of the quoted are absolute studs in QB Mitchell and WR Lezzer. Both rave about W&Ms program and would be impressive gets for the offensive side of the ball. I like the fact that we are in contention with not only the fcs powers, but also ACC teams.
