Will the Idaho Vandals still be in the SunBelt for football in 2018? - Fredo - 07-05-2015 05:35 PM

The current agreement is supposedly through the 2017 season. Will the agreement be extended?

I thought it was at least until 2017, with an autorenewal afterwards... 2 year notice requirement.

So, 2018? yes. 2019? ehhhh... I am not so sure.

I voted no, but that's just a prediction, not a wish.

Need another poll, "What year will Idaho drop back to FCS?"

2018
2019
2020

Vandals join MWC in 2018, win the conference in 2019 . . . .

. . . It's as likely as anything else being posted about them . . .

If you are betting when they drop back... you gotta add like 5 years.

No way the Idaho fans will sit back and let them immediately drop back. It will take them leaving the Sun Belt, going Indy for a few years, then realizing Independent won't work.

So I'd say closer to 2025.

Both vandals and Aggies contracts are for four seasons (2014 being the first year going to 2017) and after the 15 athletic year is over the conference will review the situation to decide whether to extend, Renew or do nothing

That being said I would be shocked if Idaho is still a football only member by 2018 or onward

I voted no because I believe that we will have found two new adds by then but I would not be opposed to having Idaho as a football only for years to come if it means we finally get to 12 football members and a championship game.

We'll know the answer to this in a few months. SBC has to notify Idaho within the next year if they intend to end the agreement at the end of 2017.

The larger question is: What is the vision for the Sun Belt as a football playing conference?

Right now, football is a 9 (full) + 2 (assoc.) member league. If Idaho is not to be considered a long term solution, then the SBC needs to determine if they are to be a 10 or 12 memeber football league. If 10 is the choice, they can simply invite NMSU as a full member and call it a day. IF 12 is the choice, again they invite NMSU and expand by 2.

Idaho is probably content to remain an associate member for football but do they really add value and are they to be considered for the long-term; I doubt it. The Sun Belt probably added them as a short term member for the convenience of both institutions. The Sun Belt is stable now so the clock is really ticking for Idaho. The Sun Belt needs to decide who they will be, post-Idaho.

But more importantly is how did this thread get to page two without becoming all about Georgia Southern.

It would help Idaho's case if they would win an OOC game. Show some value, don't be the worst team in FBS.

Oh, yeah...

What about Georgia Southern?

(Better late than never)

You could say that about the Sun Belt Conference as a whole seeing as how the conference won a grand total of 4 FBS OOC games last year.

No way... really? I mean, I never looked at it, but that just (on the surface) sounds wrong.

Yep, if the site I'm looking at is correct, these were the 4 FBS wins:

ULM beat Wake Forest (3-9 record last year)
South Alabama beat Kent State (2-9)
Ark. State beat Utah State (10-4)
Tx State beat Tulsa (2-10)

Then there were 7 wins against FCS teams and 2 FCS losses.

And that is why we need Idaho to win OOC games.04-cheers

You could throw in the Cajuns' bowl win over Nevada. That might be it, then.

You can make the argument we aren't the worst team or even second worst team in the conference. The SBC has 5 terrible teams in it, we need all of them to get better.

This poll probably has about the same breakdown as one for us and NMSU getting invited.
