Reminder for anyone in the DC area, tomorrow night is the Zable presentation out by Tyson's Corner. Hopefully there's a good turnout.

It is a shame there are not any pictures taken from the east side... The structure looks pretty imposing and it appears the sight lines in the new deck will be excellent. Pretty cool all in all.

RE: Zable Stadium Renovation - hktribefan - 06-12-2015 10:43 AM

This is the first time you can actually see something from the East Side. I would guess as time goes on they will add those pictures. Previously it had just been digging and site prep.

I had a walk around the track one evening this week... was cool to see the start of the 2nd deck in the works.

It'll be strange playing in the stadium next year with the upper deck only half complete

From what I have read/heard I thought the frame of the new structure would go up to be even with the current stands, and the press box this year would just go on top of that. From the pictures though it looks like it will be more than that. I imagine it will feel kind of like this:

Albeit on a smaller scale.

Zable Stadium - Renovation Update - June 2015

RE: Zable Stadium Renovation - Sitting bull - 06-13-2015 09:21 AM

Still not sure I understand the stationary seating capacity.

As I understand, there are no changes to the East side, so capacity there remains same.

End zones will be smaller but I can only see that as a modest issue on the south end zone. The north end zone stands only had about 10 rows anyway. So any capacity changes in the end zones would be relatively minor.

They keep mentioning the west bowl will have fewer "existing seats" due to the rails and new seats. Currently, the west bowl has 5,500 seats. So you would expect a reduction of some degree there.

The new upper level was stated originally to have 3,300 new seats. This also does not include the suites level which I would assume also count as "seats or capacity" in some way.

So if you do the math on the west bowl, unless the seating in the lower level is being reduced from 5,500 to 2,200 (which doesn't make sense), I'm not sure how we come out of this with at least 1,000 or more additional seats at Zable.

From what I've heard tell endzone sections will be 3 instead of the current 4, and I think the south ones will have fewer rows than they currently do. Since the bleachers are erected each year they can add more of demand increases. And since they're all GA, they can make additions right up until the first home game if needed. I agree that there will be a small uptick in capacity, but not as much as I previously thought with the endzone sections being reduced from what they are currently.

At the Williamsburg meeting Spencer was not definite on how many rows, sections or seats will be in the end zone. He said in essence ,it is to be determined at a later date.

Whether the final regular capacity is 12,000 or 14,000 is almost irrelevant..... additional bleachers, after all, could be erected for a particular game where the demand requires it.

What really counts is that after the reconstruction is finished we will have a modernized jewel box of a football stadium that will provide people a full experience...the new food court in the end zone behind the scoreboard offering families many choices, a jazzed-up W&M merchandise booth, easily accessible and wider seats,
a brand new sound system, and better sight lines from the new upper deck.

There are also plans to provide additional parking in the open area adjacent to Plumeri Park
with mini-buses going back and forth to Zable from an hour or two before and after games. That would both provide additional tailgating space and do lots to ease the usual traffic mess around Richmond Road and the Stadium before and after games.

We all hope, too, that the revitalization of the football experience at Zable also includes the importation
of several top quality quarterbacks!

I wouldn't count on it. In more than almost 40 years I have been following, with ample sellout games during that period, I have never seen W&M put up or even offer additional seating for a sold out game.

The setting of all the upgrades just sounds magnificent though. Can't wait for the new look.

I am sure there are at least 45 Government Regulations defining the "Official Capacity" of Zable Stadium. To increase capacity temporarily for a "sell-out" crowd may require an Act of Congress for approval for all we know. As we do know, the "Authorities" require the stadium be evacuated if lightening is reported anywhere within a ten mile [not sure exacatly on the miles] radius.

Can we stay in the suites?

The "Authorities" follow the NCAA policy on lightning. Which, incidentally, was based largely on A Model Lightning Safety Policy for Athletics authored by Brian Bennett in 1997 while he was on the athletic training staff at W&M.

Picture posted by the QB Club twitter account shows the frame of the second deck starting to take shape. I thought they were only building up to the top of the current level and then would sit a temporary press place on top of that. Exciting to see things moving.
