The new logo looks great...without the swoosh underneath. With that tail, it looks like some cheesy 80's baseball logo.

Disagree with the dislike of the swoosh and W&M name on the new logo. College has finally realized you have to connect W&M and Tribe in the same logo.
We know Tribe stands for W&M, but the overwhelming majority have no idea who the Tribe represents.
The new logo was unanimously popular with Reveley, the BOV, a student panel and a number of W&M graduates marketing graduates. It's here to stay and will be seen on most college communications, buildings
and events.

Personally I agree with the "80's baseball" similarity, but it is what it is, I guess.
It's just a shame they had to invest time and effort (and $, no doubt) in designing a logo that "connects W&M and Tribe" when we had a perfectly good one that did just that.

No problem with the disagreement, just not sure who the "overwhelming majority" is and what target audience they represent. I am pretty sure any broadcast, online presence, or print media I have seen it is very apparent that "Tribe" is also "William and Mary".
Now, if your talking about apparel, I can get that argument.

The farther you get from the East Coast, the less there is a connection between "Tribe" and WIlliam & Mary". (Heck, even if you're as close as in Ohio, it definitely isn't W&M.) It does come down to branding and this does solve an ongoing (if small) problem in that area.
It probably was not targeted for the broadcast/print arena, as they would be including W&M in the story, as well, but more for where the logo might end up in a non-specific area (say, a photo or merchandise), then it would be an adept identifier.
Anyway, it's not like we haven't seen "cheesy" before...

I think it will look awesome on apparel, which is the main purpose most likely. I dont know how many times Ive been to the bookstore looking for something and everything looks like crap bc they cant get a good logo with both WM and Tribe in the same space. This is a much needed improvement.
Now if only we can get that Medieval Griffin somehow built into some merch...

I think the new "Tribe" lettering looks fine, but I'm a little confused as to why it appears that the only way to tie "Tribe" to William & Mary is to include the words "William & Mary" in the athletic logo.
The swoosh under the logo is not a good look - 17 characters is way too many for a logo - it looks cluttered and will be difficult to use. Very few schools include the entire school name in their athletic logo, and for good reason.
Admittedly, its tough to connect "Tribe" to William & Mary, so why not try designing a W&M logo that makes a more natural connection instead of trying to cram everything into one logo? Simplicity is key.
The feathered W&M logo worked because it was instantly recognizable and most people understood that W&M stood for William & Mary.
Plucking the feathers out of the old "W&M" logo made the logo look bare, and the redesigned "W&M" with the upside-down W/M was not a good look, but I think that the answer would have been to try to rethink that logo instead of the "new" athletic logo.

Tribe is kinda an abstract concept, which makes a logo showing William and Mary and Tribe kinda hard to do without using wordmarks.
