Zable Stadium Renovation - WMSportsBlog - 01-07-2015 09:49 AM

William & Mary just posted a great "Hype Video" on the Zable Stadium upgrades. Definitely a great one to check out, and well worth your time. Can't get enough! The 2016 home opener will be one to remember.

It would be neat if they could put up a construction cam. I know a lot of the work this year is probably foundation work etc., but it would still be cool to be able to see what's going on at the work site. The FAQ page says a new seating plan will be communicated this spring, so we'll get a sense for seating options, prices, and capacity I think. I wonder what the demand is like for the suites?

A Zable renovation needs this to be brought back:

Chuck Varner was awesome -- and so were his bands.

That and a colossal gaffe by the UVA Pep Band

By the way, the W&M one still has that big drum with the old Indians logo on it, it's pretty cool

I'd love to hear about this gaffe

There wasn't any real "gaffe." The U.Va. athletic dept had disliked the pep band for decades, and had already tried once before to get rid of them and replace them with a "scab band." Over the years the athletic dept had tightened their grip -- censorship of halftime show scripts, etc.

As a scramble band, the U.Va. pep band's shows were largely a series of jokes (admittedly not great ones, and got even less funny as the censorship increased), accompanied by songs. A staple of some halftime shows was a joke poking fun at the day's opponent. (E.g, at a Maryland game after Md. Gov. Marvin Mandel was convicted in the 1970s, he was announced as "special guest conductor" and the student band leader came out in prison attire.). Opponents were less inclined to take these jokes in good humor if they lost to U.Va. (a rare event when I was there).

Anyway, the athletic dept's machinations finally came to a head, IIRC, after the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl against West Va. (This was during the Al Groh era). The W.Va. joke was based on one of those dating TV shows - a guy had to choose between a "Va. girl" and a "W.Va. girl". I believe there were references to outhouses or bad teeth or some other hillbilly stereotypes. All of this had been seen and approved in advance by the athletic department's censors.

As it turned out, WVU lost the game pretty badly, various unhappy fans and university/state officials complained, and they provided the U.Va. athletic department with a pretext to do what they wanted to do anyway -- get rid of the band.

The athletic department's shabby treatment of the pep band continued for several years thereafter. They were banned from football and men's basketball games, replaced by the marching band. The pep band volunteered to play in the stands at non-revenue sports, but the athletic dept would not let them even do that.

On the positive side, I should note that a major donor to the new U.Va. band was W&M alumna Hunter Smith, who also is a huge supporter of the College in general and the Zable Stadium renovation in particular.

It's my age I guess - but a big marching band at UVA just seems out of place. I have seen them, nothing really wrong with them except it seems so generic. I'm not even aware they even have any fight songs or march songs associated with the school - just the Good Ole Days rendition.

I still miss the W&M Victory March - which sort of disappeared with the our marching band.

Now it is JMU that conducts a Summer Band School, I guess.

I have the Victory March on my iPod. I play it every time we win. It's a real shame we never play it at games anymore because I think it's our best song.

Seconded. It is a great tune, and I'm sure the pep band can add it to their repertoire.

That said, it would be great to have a marching band and I would definitely throw in if it came time to pass the hat around, so to speak.

I love the Victory March!

Hail Indian warrior team
Down the field march on to victory

Victory March

The Charles Varner-led W&M Band was something special and has a warm place in the hearts of
every Indians' student who had the opportunity to watch them at football games and other events.

I have to say, however, that the growth, spirit and excellence of the totally student led and run W&M Pep Band has become a great presence at Tribe events. They have come from a rag-tag
small group of dedicated gals and guys to a really impressive group of around 100 talented musicians in their own right.

They add game color and music to Tribe sports (and other gatherings, for that matter)...
never better than supporting raucus, supportive W&M crowds at recent men's basketball games.

The Band is gone...long live the Pep Band.

I miss the Varner bands and the Victory March. That is not a slight to the Pep Band, which has come into its own. Thank you Pep Band. Any chance you can incorporate the Victory March into your repertoire?

Would make a great intro song and tradition to accompany the team entrance at bball games rather than the taped music. They could run the words on the scoreboard to help everyone sing it. Tribe could easily be substituted for Indian to stay politically correct. Great way to get the crowd pumped early. Same could be done at football game entrances.

RE: Zable Stadium Renovation - Blow Gym rat - 02-03-2015 04:28 PM

I think the old tradition was that it was bad luck to play the Victory March before the end of a game. Can anybody confirm?

(Something about the composer being an ancestor of Tom Petty, or somethings).
