UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - tribe_pride - 12-09-2014 08:43 AM

Means that W&M and Northeastern are the only 2 CAA schools with Men's track. Women's track will have 6 schools, Men's XC will be down to 5 schools while women's XC will remain at 9 schools.

They are adding women's beach volleyball which will probably be more popular but the drop in running programs in the CAA and across the country is sad.

Who cares? Just more road-kill from Big Government/Title IX

This seems odd to me. I'd imagine track programs don't have that much overhead

I blame political correctness and Obamacare.

Sad to see this happen to a men's program that has won so many CAA titles. Not sure what our administration plans to do on our end, but only two track schools is concerning as both a track coach and former athlete.

RE: UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - BeliefBlazer - 12-09-2014 12:51 PM

Men's track and XC just happen to be the two sports we are adding. Hate to see sports cut at any school.

RE: UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - BigTribe - 12-09-2014 04:54 PM

We have strong, vibrant track & xcountry programs, greatly supported by not only the W&M administration, but by may former Tribe athletes in those sports who contribute dollars to the programs.

Our teams are dotted with regional and national athletes...if you check our schedules you'll see that 95% of the meets we participate in have little connection, if any, to the CAA and are national and regional in scope.

Frankly, the CAA has little effect on our programs.

Our XC teams are great. Women's made nationals, and mens have won the CAA for 15 straight years.

I would love men's lax, but why would we add it now? Just seemed random to bring up in this thread.

I think you could field a very competitive Lax program even if you didn't have a lot of scholarships to give out. The sport is way more popular in Virginia than it was 30 years ago when the Tribe had a varsity program. It would be easy to get started if the money was there to launch it. Title IX shouldn't stand in the way

There's never a bad time to add men's lacrosse. Nor is there a bad time to advocate adding men's lacrosse

what does men's lacrosse add to the school?

I ask this question as someone that enjoys watching college lacrosse games

RE: UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - Tribal - 12-09-2014 10:25 PM

32, if we add mens LAX, we'll have to add a womens sport to meet Title IX mandates. Softball would be the only logical option there. Rowing/Crew?
So, you'd have to dump money into two programs.

The question about what LAX offers our school is probably best answered by our resident former LAX coach, TG.

Isn't that enough? That people would enjoy watching William & Mary play college lacrosse.

Would you need to add another program, or could you just add scholarships to existing women's teams? I don't know if we're at the scholorship limit for all women's sports, but if we added men's lax with say 7 scholarships, couldn't we just slip an extra scholly or two into a few women's teams?

This is one of the common misconceptions about Title IX. You don't need a proportional number of women's programs or even a proportional number of women's scholarships. As long as women's athletics are "fully and effectively accommodated by the present program" the school is seen as in compliance with Title IX. Whether or not W&M meets that criteria is another discussion.

RE: UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - Tribal - 12-09-2014 11:50 PM

Okay, I'll bite...how else would a school "fully and effectively accommodate" a program if not through scholarships?

RE: UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - zablenoise - 12-10-2014 12:06 AM

The provision actually specifically comes into play "where the members of one sex are underrepresented." And there all types of ways to accommodate programs including equipment, scheduling, coaching, academic tutoring, facilities, medical staff, and publicity among other things.

All of this from the Department of Ed's Policy Interpretation of Title IX: http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/t9interp.html

RE: UNCW to drop Men's and Women's Track and Men's XC - tribe_pride - 12-10-2014 08:05 AM

The thing is that basically nobody actually uses the "fully and effectively accommodated by the present program." While it is an option, it is tougher to prove and everyone goes with the proportion way of doing things.
