When coaching kids it's imperative to teach them the rules of the game. In a state semi-final last night in Norfolk, Monacan H.S. blocked a Lake Taylor field goal try with seconds left in the game to seemingly preserve a 14-12 win. Monacan players erupted in celebration, neglecting the fact that the ball was still behind the line of scrimmage meaning it was still live. Lake Taylor kicker picked it up and ran untouched into the end zone for a winning TD.

My Warhill Lions scrimmaged Monacan in the preseason, and I was pulling for them to win the 4A state title. They seemed well coached at the time, but obviously the kids did not know this rule.

A personal favorite expression, "that's what Makes a horse race" applies here. Seeing this sequence from the Lake Taylor side of things demos the value of composure and clear thinking overruling "out of control" self expression. From a distance there's a humorous side to this. From either side it's unforgettable. Lots to learn from here. A once in a lifetime coaching / teaching opportunity.

My son's team (Stone Bridge) lost to Westfield this year 15-9. The difference was a blocked field goal where they ran it back 80 yards for a TD. Everyone knew the rules, but nobody could catch him. I'd love this rule to be in effect at all levels.
