Will Football Playoff Force Conference Expansion for BIG12? - SkullyMaroo - 11-25-2014 07:37 PM

Right now the playoff rankings are this:

1. Alabama (SEC)
2. Oregon (PAC12)
3. Florida State (ACC)
4. Mississippi State (SEC)

5. TCU (BIG 12)
6. Ohio State (Big Ten)
7. Baylor (BIG 12)
8. UCLA (PAC 12)

The BIG 12 does not have a championship game. Assuming everyone listed above wins out, Mississippi State will likely get jumped after championship Saturday. But will Ohio State jump to that #4 spot since they will have an extra game (and against a good opponent)? If so, you would have to imagine that since the lack of a conference championship game cost the BIG 12 a shot at the playoffs that it would force some conversations on expansion. And until the Sun Belt has a conference championship game, why can't we follow the BIG 12's lead and schedule 3 bye weeks and have games on "championship" Saturday?

TCU and West Virginia were great adds for the Big 12 but I do think they need two more.

I would add Louisville asap if I were them as the 11th member but idk who for the 12th.

I don't believe Louisville would leave the ACC for the XII...

RE: Will Football Playoff Force Conference Expansion for BIG12? - slycat - 11-25-2014 09:50 PM

Louisville was all but begging the Big XII before ACC took them. Big XII should have added them and another when they had the chance.

I believe in the end either TCU or Baylor will make the playoff.

Cincinnati and UCF to Big 12, later followed by Memphis and South Florida(I'm off work this week and bored).

I just think it shows how the influence of eSECpn and the Cartel still has a strangle hold in this. I don't care if your conference isn't deemed as "great" as the SEC, if you have a loss you shouldn't be ahead of an undefeated team (and defending cartel champion)....at all. Then you have another 1 loss team ahead of TCU and/or Baylor because of the same bias.

Finally.....stAte to the Big 12 becomes a reality! My bags are packed.

Pfft. Just have them take TXST and UTSA and be done with it.

So much can still happen- but if all the top teams win out, I don't see how the committee can take a Mississippi State team, that doesn't even go to it's league's championship game, over a 1 lost champion be it TCU, Baylor, or Ohio State. You know Jeff Long and his buddies have to be praying that some of the one loss teams lose another game.

Why wouldn't they? Wouldn't they make more money in the Big 12?

Big 12 is a stronger football conference than the ACC. Basketball probably isnt as good but it's still a top conference. Plus they would have a relatively close conference rival in West Virginia.

Aren't the ACC schools stuck in a deal to where they would have to sell their souls in order to leave the conference?

The committee is ranking based off of who they think the best teams are, 1-4. Would you honestly say FSU is a better team than Oregon or Alabama? They are at number 3 out of respect for their title last season. I would pick Miss St, TCU, and Baylor over FSU if they played today.

I think so and that almost kept Maryland from jumping to the Big 10

BYU is probably the only school out there that they would like to have..

agree, B12 should have gone to 12 with UL and Cincy. but that bird has flown, UL won't go to B12.

B12 won't add anyone for at least another year, and 2 to 5 years is more likely. They will play out the TV deal a bit further before doing anything, and watch the available schools to see who is doing what.

Don't think a close conference opponent is that big of a deal to the P5.

West Virginia sure has been complaining about the costs associated with the move. I can see a case for Cincinnati and BYU being invited to the Big XII. I have always thought the P5 playoff would be expanded to eight teams in a few years. Once someone gets left out the whining will begin. Five auto bids and three at large teams should be enough to satisfy everyone involved.

I've been thinking the same thing. 8 team playoff is the way to go.
