"There's a very real possibility of football going away" - CajunFanatico - 08-18-2014 09:08 PM

So says Hawaii athletics director Ben Jay.

Hawaii is currently facing a $2.1 million budget deficit this year and has worked under a budget deficit during 11 of the past 13 years.

Hawaii can dump football after the Warhawks play them in 2015.

So would the Mountain Worst take, Idaho? NMSU? or neither?

The MWC would beg and plead BYU to join them before going that route, but they'll ultimately go that route, unless UNM begs and pleads for NMSU, which I don't see happening.

CUSA then responds by inviting JMU...which balances out some divisional issues, but probably doesn't thrill the Texas teams. That wont stop all 11 SBC Programs from being linked to the opening, despite the fact only one or two may actually be interested, and CUSA wont be interested in either of those teams.

The Red Herring in the room would be if an Eastern Washington or high level Big Sky team expressed an interest in FBS, and would MWC take a chance on a move up.

Well that would suck! Hopefully they can come up with the funds.

The Mountain West could go after Texas St to get into the state.

I was in Oahu couple of weeks ago and never got the sense that UH football culture was overwhelmingly steeped in their communities. I didn't see a lot of people wearing UH jerseys and didn't see much paraphernalia at the stores either. Well, then again, most people were walking around without shirts, so I guess that may explain my observation.

I also didn't realize how far Aloha Bowl was from the UH campus. I think the distance was like 12 miles.

Wouldn't make sense with UTEP available.

Assuming UTEP would be interested. A poster across the street said the UTEP AD likes playing teams in Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. That makes sense to me and he's got that with C-USA.

But looking at a map of the United States, UTEP sure looks like it would fit better in the MWC than C-USA.

Personally, I think the comments by Hawaii's AD were significant. You just don't say stuff like that if you're not serious.

Football is hard on Hawaii and more so when they don't win!

really no reason for MWC to add anybody should they lose Hawaii

MWC would drop to 11 teams and would lose their championship game. plenty of reason to replace Hawaii if they leave.

interesting domino to consider if Hawaii drops and UTEP moves to MWC, that would leave CUSA with 13. CUSA could then-

1. Stay at 13
2. Add UMass
3. Add another FCS (please no)
4. Bump a team back to the Sun Belt, giving both CUSA and the Belt 12 members.

Hayden Fry will smite you if you don't watch out.

Somehow, I don't see CUSA bumping anyone out...though it is funny to think about.

The two aren't really comparable. One is a vacation destination in the Appalachian Mountains, the other is a large border town on the Texas/New Mexico border.

Personally...I don't have El Paso on my list of vacation destinations.

Or.....this is just a way for the AD to scare up some support from boosters and the community. It worked for Tulane back in 2003 when they threatened to drop to non-scholarship D3 football.
