July 1--- Ga. Southern and App. St. join Sun Belt - GaSoEagle - 06-13-2014 06:29 PM

Just wondered since Ga. State and Texas St. joined recently did either school do anything special on July 1 to signify joining the Sun Belt?

Is App. St. doing anything this year?

I haven't heard anything about Ga. Southern planning anything yet.

Tough to plan much of anything in the middle of summer(and so close to the 4th). I'd imagine celebrations will be tied to the first home FB game of the year for most.

You might see an article on an Athletics site, but I don't think you'll see anything else...outside of the SoCon stuff vanishing for good.

Evidently so, Sun Belt day events planned in Boone July 1.

Boy, App is really all over this "Together We Rise" mantra.

If App is doing these things I have to believe Ga. Southern will be doing something, although I have heard nothing of it yet.

You didn't ask about UTA, which joined the same time as TXST and GAST, but there was a small athletic function but not much else.

I wonder if App will have as big of a part in conference media relations as we did in the SoCon. Our radio crew called every game for SoCon baseball and basketball.

We have our own guys and they're pretty special. Have been associated with the U for at least a decade but when it comes to TV (football) games, we lose control to people who know diddly squat about the schools and their teams.

I assume the July 1st date is when all college sports come to a close for the 2013-2014 year and is just a formality.

As far as I'm concerned we're already in the Belt. 04-cheers

Our announcers seem to know more about the other team than their coaches, players or fans know. Always funny to hear a long pause when maybe their coach or newspaper reporter, or broadcaster is asked something they know nothing about concerning their own team.

Think July 1st is the beginning of the NCAA fiscal year.

Our events are also the introduction of our new Chancellor.

I doubt it, but don't take that as a slight to David Jackson.

IMO, outside of the Georgia Southern radio crew & network and Chuck at Furman, there was no one else in the league that could fog a mirror, let alone put together a top quality radio broadcast and manage the technical aspects of doing what David did.

I am pretty sure David and App stepped up and volunteered to do it to push the SoCon into the 21st century when they did the first webcasting at the SoCon rouser, and the rest of it followed by default. At the time, few in the league was streaming media and most of the web properties were being outsourced.

This happened around the time the GSU radio crew was transitioning between Nate Hirsch to the guys that are there now.

David Jackson was hands down the best radio guy in the conference. He's a baseball first guy, so he should love the SBC.

I assume you are talking about the tourneys in those sports?

Yes.

Can't disagree that he was the best, but I don't know if he's better than Chris Blair hands down.

Chris was a finalist to take over as Tech's play-by-play guy after Wes Durham left. He'll probably end up at a P5 school before long.

Yep, sure thought he was gone. Glad he stayed...for now.
