Ours has been pretty much coaching for free for three years in a row. Plus we had one guy pay us to be coach.

nice. upping the salary is one of the best ways to keep a coach from jumping ship. good move

It's true. And it has worked great.

But it does cause heartburn.

Never thought of buy out clauses as a profit making venture. Very nice.

The drawback being that you have to win your bowl games without a coaching staff. Kind of a bummer.

You guys have created an interesting niche. ASU has become coaching U. Do well over there and move on up very quickly.

Over 5% of ULL's budget goes to one coach, that seems high. Where is that money coming from?

I agree are you not paying your assistants?

I'm sure someone can come in here and give a more accurate answer than me, but we're about to break last year's RCAF donation record just 6 months into the year.

We also have an RCAF banquet after the football season, and 100% of the proceeds from that event goes straight into the assistants salary pool (I think).

Also banking on the increased number of season tickets sold this year, as well as revenue anticipated from crowds hopefully larger than 28k (6 home games) this year.

Highest paid assistants in the Sun Belt.

I will answer both questions.

First; the accounting practices we use exclude very significant costs associated with athletics that are not included in the athletic budget. As an example, building maintenance is charged to the University Grounds department, or in the case of the Cajundome, to the City of Lafayette. Therefore, what looks like 5% isn't really 5%. In any event, only $175K/yr of Hud's salary is being paid by the University; the rest is being paid by the boosters.

We pay our assistants at or very near the top of the conference.

Yeah I do a several times a year explanation that varying accounting practices make reported budget figures unreliable when comparing between schools but it's a wasted effort.

RE: Louisiana Raises the Bar [Coaching] - Saint3333 - 06-13-2014 02:16 PM

I can understand the differences in accounting policies and could see why building maintenance may not be an athletic expense, but a coach's salary should be included. Under what department are those expenses held?

My CPA nose is smelling something with this explanation.

Mr.VO, if I'm not mistaken I think that cap is $225K on any state employee.

Total Coaches Salary and Compensation Line shows the actual expense, that number is offset by another line in the budget called Donations and other Goods and Services. There is no accounting trick to it, standard P&L Reporting.

Its amazing how those little lists of athletic budgets get viewed as holy writ.
