It's tough to say. The conference is pretty level overall. I think Troy will ahve to prove themselves as they have slipped recently and ULM showed what they are without Browning. Yes they have a transfer but not sure what impact that will have yet. I think USA is number three right now. App St may be higher then TXST by having the "easier" confernece schedule. But App St has a lot to prove after last season even if they have returning players.

I think stAte and UL are the top two and GSU, Idaho, and NMSU are the bottom three. The rest is a wash.

Of course someone will surprise everyone and someone will disappoint.

How do we have the easier conference schedule playing Louisiana and stAte on the road?

I thought y'all dodged them this year. Or is that GS?

I might have agreed had we not just signed the transfer QB we'll go as far as he takes us.

He could be good, Arrow. Rivals had him at 16th, the highest of all the services, and ESPN had him at 91st, the lowest of all the services. Here's his stat breakdown from college:

Way too many sacks and INTs to just be bad coaching. Almost 100 sacks over his three year career and more INTs than TDs over three years of college play. If I had to guess I'd imagine part of the reason he's transferring is because he wasn't getting it done at Colorado State or NC State.

you know those games where you put the dice into a little tumbler and shake and spill them out.....like Yahtzee or something like that....it is very possible the afore rankings could be correct and I think the random rolling the team dice could just as likely be a predictor of what it looks like at the end of the year....could be lots of fun for all......Browning like Aplin were the real deals.....Corey Robinson could throw the ball but as leader those other two had it way way way way over him.....

RE: Southern Pigskin Ranks Sun Belt Football Teams - arkstfan - 04-30-2014 11:55 AM

I've learned to not place much stock in pre-season. The closest coaches prediction in several years was the pick of UL as co-champ but got the other side of wrong. AState has never been picked to win the league since 2001.

The middle of the standings are almost always a mess because so many games turn on the bounce of a fumble or a key injury.

Mostly its crap because nobody is going to do the degree of research necessary to get it right (except Phil Steele). But what else are we going to talk about in April/May?

RE: Southern Pigskin Ranks Sun Belt Football Teams - GSUCadet - 04-30-2014 12:57 PM

App State is ranked too high, and Texas State is too low. I think they made a decent effort, but I would rank the following:

1. UL
2. Ark State
3. ULM
4. Troy
5. Texas State
6. USA
7. Ga Southern
8. App State
9. Ga State
10. NMSU
11. Idaho

Very good ranking. You put all the bowl eligible teams on top in the order they finished last season. We can assume GS and APP, with their rich FCS histories that they will fare better than GSU, a start up from half a decade ago. We can also assume everyone will be better than NMSU and Idaho.

But maybe this is the safe answer.

I might have agreed had we not just signed the transfer QB we'll go as far as he takes us.

You mean signed a QB that has very little game experience at two different FBS programs and is now transfering to a third? Don't equate NC State transfer with instant success.
I believe he has about 20 or more FBS starts under his belt, but no one really knows what to expect out of him at this point. I will say fourth looks about right for us. We have a veteran team and a strong looking defense.

That's Georgia Southern that has neither one of them on their schedule.

Yet another reason to want divisions and a championship game. What it GS ends up one game ahead of UL and stAte in the standings? Championship games are a must in a league larger than nine teams in my opinion.

Lost two starting WR's and Kam Bryant is serviceable but no world beater at QB to make up for it. We are also small in the trenches unless some of last years redshirts step up. I would put us at 8. Idaho and GSU are still in the bottom and G Southern is trying out a new offense. Best case 6, worst case 9.
I think trying to forecast anything beyond the first 2 spots is problematic.

Or bottom two spots(Idaho/GSU). Yes 3-9 are very fluid. My personal opinion of where App will fall is 6-9. Could I be wrong of course. That's why they play the games. Just giving an opinion.
I will actually be shocked if we fall below Idaho and NMSU.

Pre season rankings don't mean a whole lot. Orlando Sentinel is ranking all 128 FBS TEAMS. Georgia State is 128 APP 126 Georgia Southern 124 they are on 118 no NMSU or Idaho yet.

Or to stay at 9 sometime in the future.
Then you would have 4 home and 4 away games and everyone gets to play everyone once each year.

Move Idaho to 6th slide the rest down accordingly. Maybe swap NMSU and Georgia State .

However, my blue-tinted glasses (that are NOT worn at night) have me seeing Southern above USA. My pride and our tradition can't fathom some start-up team being better than us.

RE: Southern Pigskin Ranks Sun Belt Football Teams - GoApps70 - 04-30-2014 04:53 PM

So every Georgia Southern poster thinks the correct order is that App State is ranked too high, and should magically be place just below them.

Actual Southern Pigskin Rankings
1. UL
2. Ark State
3. Troy
4. ULM
5. USA
6. App State
7 Texas State
8. Ga Southern
9. Idaho
10. NMSU
11.Ga State
