Then it was stupid starting a new topic off this article without dating it :)

someone (me) that didn't know when it was wrote would get the feeling it was current.

But I still think it's a lot more likely EKU gets a invite other than applying for membership. It makes more sense to work behind closed doors than to be rejected (if that happens) in public.

Ok so as an EKU fan I am confused on how this works. I was under the impression that to be invited you had to apply for membership before you could be invited. Is that not correct?

You do. But you often don't do this without at least knowing you have a reasonable chance to get an invite.

If a school applies to the conference everyone would take that to mean they were very serious about it.
No if's , and's, but's and maybe's it would sound like.

Its a bold step, because its basically telling the Ohio Valley "we want out"

If you don't get an invite...you end up with a certain amount of egg on your face. Leads me to wonder what that conversation is like with the SBC.

Is it a fact that eku applied or hear say?

The way I look at it is in terms of marriage:

1. Proposing - formally applying for membership.
2. Marriage Ceremony - Conference voting you in.

99.999% of the time, a guy isn't going to propose unless he knows the gal will say yes. Similarly, a team most likely isn't going to formally apply for membership unless the conference will accept.

Who knows what is going on-- Liberty and Eastern Kentucky have both made it clear they will accept if the Sun Belt offers. If, and that is a big if, we add this year the clock is ticking. I assume the Spring meetings are sometime around May 20 or so and at that point if we are going to add one would have to believe the decision would have to be made by then.

RE: Heard EKU has applied for membership - Birdseye - 04-22-2014 08:26 PM

Eastern Kentucky had better get their students, alumni and fans interested in football if they are planning to move up. Based on attendance from recent years, they draw less that most 6-A high schools in Georgia.

What was WKU's attendance before they announced a move up? If EKU's numbers are similar, that could work in their favor.

RE: Heard EKU has applied for membership - cleburneslim - 04-22-2014 09:04 PM

EKU average attendance 8,617
liberty. 15,031
Jax St. 15,841

I believe WKU's attendance the year before we made the decision to move up was about 13,000.

Quick google search, here are a few numbers for comparison from NCAA stats:
1999 EKU 10,496 WKU 9,010
2000 EKU. 8,991. WKU 8,800
2003 EKU. 11,020 WKU 10,124
2005 EKU. 8,440 WKU 12,798
Not sure what was considered WKU's last year in IAA/FCS, but these were a few earlier years I quickly came across.
We have said over and over, our fans and alumni have continually lost interest as the OVC has continued to change and we have lost old rivals. Last years attendance was bad. Homecoming which always boosts attendance figures was a washout. Monsoon hit about an hour before kickoff and many (most) never left the parking lot for the stadium.
On another note. Someone mentioned in this thread or another, a reference to the
"OVC realizing EKU's intention of leaving the OVC". I think President Benson had already made that clear as a possibility.

Says in CFD that 2009 was WKU first year in SB.

I definitely prefer EKU to JSU or Liberty...not even close.

I do know there was talk 7-8 years before WKU actually transitioned to FBS. And of course an official announcement they were moving to the SB several years prior to 2009. Looking at attendance (see prior post) a number of years prior to a solid announcement there was little difference in EKU/WKU attendance numbers. In 2005 where their attendance jumped some at WKU some.......guess who came to Bowling Green that year? You guessed it. EKU. I didn't have time to look numbers up this morning, but I would bet that was their largest crowd in 2005.. Always was for both teams over the many years we played each other.
Now, as far as comparing what may happen at EKU as compared Western. That's a guess. I do remember one year that WKU football players went door to door in Bowling Green asking residents to buy tickets for games. So it was not all that easy in BG as they might have us believe. I am sure EKU will have to have a major plan for re engaging fans and alumni. I would imagine that the athletic administration realizes this as necessary as part of a move.
