Eat Up! A step in the right direction. - Godzilla - 04-17-2014 12:15 PM

Progress is progress is progress. The NCAA Legislative Council approved a few new “well-being rules” on Tuesday that can be made final when the Division I Board of Directors meets on April 24. Chief among the changes is that student-athletes can receive unlimited meals and snacks instead of the three meals a day or stipend previously in place. This was an attempt to “meet the nutritional needs of all student-athletes.”

Via the NCAA:

The adoption of the meals legislation finished a conversation that began in the Awards, Benefits, Expenses and Financial Aid Cabinet. Members have worked to find appropriate ways to ensure student-athletes get the nutrition they need without jeopardizing Pell Grants or other federal aid received by the neediest student-athletes. With their vote, members of the council said they believe that loosening NCAA rules on what and when food can be provided from athletics departments is the best way to address the issue.

Here are the other rules changes the council voted on:

Require strength and conditioning coaches to be certified from a nationally accredited certification body;
Require a school staff member certified in CPR, first aid and arterial external defibrillation to be present at all physical, countable athletic activities;
Reduce the penalty for a first positive test for street drugs during championships; and
Require football players to rest for at least three hours between practices during the preseason. Film review and team meetings will be allowed during this period.

The penalty for a positive test for “street drugs,” including marijuana, was reduced from a full season to a half season. All changes would go into effect on Aug. 1.

Good change with the food. I thought they had unlimited food, but I guess you can only each so much at the buffet line at one time. Did read an SI story about how some players were "starving" and needed money to buy their food. So I'd imagine allowing them to eat whenever they want on campus and providing them with more funds on road trips is common sense.

Since a few states have made marijuana legal and more will likely, what do you think will happen with this rule? I don't think it'll improve performance on the field. It's like if a player smokes they suspend him.

I think until the law is applicable to everyone they keep it the same. I also seriously doubt it would help you on the field but it creates an unfair advantage off the field. I'm sure recruits would flock to a place they could play D1 ball AND smoke weed without consequences, it would help athletes with soreness, and I wouldn't mind my OL/DL having the munchies all the time lol. Just like alcohol as long as they keep up their grades, never go to practice stoned, and never let it get you in trouble with the law I don't have a problem with it and it seems the NCAA is moving that way as well.

The legalization of marijuana won't prevent institutions and employers from having their own regulations regarding use. If companies can legally discriminate against tobacco users, the same can apply to a lot of things. Tobacco use restrictions have opened the door to regulate individual choices ranging from diet to exercise to substance use.
