It is believed they DO want to go FBS, but need another year or two. Moving their basketball wasn't that appealing to them for a long time (can you blame them?), but it is also believed they are becoming more and more disenchanted with the MVC. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but MSU appears to be making the moves behind the scenes for an FBS move, and have had a lot of contact with ASU.

I would be interested in what this poll would look like with only current member fans voting...

Wow, the Sun Belt is lucky Witchita St. didn't make a huge run in the NCAA's this year. That would have been a ton of money to walk away from. Still, the MVC would be a very hard conference to walk away from for the expenses of a start-up FBS program.

Am surprised at some of the voting so far.
Should be able to extrapolate pretty well.

We can skip the poll for this one. The eastern teams want James Madison. The western teams want Missouri State.

It's actually surprising by looking at who voted on what school how many
Eastern school posters are voting for Missouri State, and how many Western
school posters are voting for JMU or UMass.

Actually I voted for Missouri St not because I'm in the west (GS fan) but because of all the possible adds they have the most potential therefore they are the best long term addition. If I were to rank the possible adds in this poll by FBS potential I would say:

1. Missouri St
2. Liberty
3. UMass
4. James Madison
5. EKU

If I rank them by desirability:
1. Missouri St
2. James Madison
3. EKU
4. Liberty
5. UMass

Well if you're looking solely at football it's hard to argue against JMU or UMass.

No to UMass. Adding them as a football only would be as bad as Idaho. They are a quick fix that leads to long term problems.

...but we already have Idaho...I'd prefer to pass on UMass and drop Idaho. I want a nice tight footprint.

Exactly. so why add another school that would be just as bad and brings another crap team.

Personally, I'd love to drop: Idaho and New Mexico State and add: James Madison, Liberty and Missouri State, not that I expect that this will happen.

Yelp. Would be good if our system worked that way.
Would still get non-SBC votes regardless.

The real question seems to coming down to whether the 11 schools think it is important enough to get a championship game to invite UMass or Liberty or whether they are happy to just stay at 11 with no championship game.

RE: If the Sun Belt Added One Football School in 2014 You Would Want - GoApps70 - 04-01-2014 05:34 AM

The proposed bill to allow a championship game regardless of number
in the conference may have an impact also.

umass as a football only does not add a huge travel increase to budgets. at most that means one away game for football every two years. teams in the west one trip every four years.

RE: If the Sun Belt Added One Football School in 2014 You Would Want - GoApps70 - 04-01-2014 06:32 AM

UMass has to have a place to move to. It's imperative to keep their
football program alive in the FBS. We could probably get a lot of
home and home basketball games in return if that's what the SBC
presidents want.
But they may be thinking more long term and want an all sports school.
Some of their moves may have been considered a car wreck.

Looks like 16 Falwell U fans voted. This poll isn't very telling when all the Liberty spammers have a vote.
