Troy Football Player Charged with Murder - slappycajun - 12-16-2013 11:58 AM

Sorry if this is a repost. But, it's the first I remember seeing about it.

I saw this on CNN; talk about the wrong way to make headlines. I don't understand why they have to play up the fact that he was a Troy football player (walk on at that)?

Hmmm, gets me?

Walk on or not he is just as much part of the Troy football program as any other player.

The reason you mention "killed by a Troy football player" it makes it different from the other 46 people who got shot and killed that day.

I just have no words for this.

I know the whole Fulmer's cup concept is a joke...but after lots of jokes about teams with players in stupid trouble, this is not something you joke about.

Several times the first media reports are not correct.
As a JSU fan, every program has a few bad apples.
Don't agree with the AD discounting walk-ons, poor taste. His statement discredits the quality walk-ons at Troy and other programs.

That Texas Tech starting QB this year was a walk-on and was good. He got injured then Texas Tech struggled the rest of the year without him. He would have received a scholarship next year, but he just announced he is transferring, but he was good and was a walk-on.

Crazy question since he was a walk on would he have to sit out. Him not being on scholarship would seem to me that he can transfer no questions asked.

Well he was also academically ineligible to play anyway.

RE: Troy Football Player Charged with Murder - Louisiana99 - 12-17-2013 12:12 AM

He practiced with the scout team...he was part of the team

Yes. He's allowed to do that. But was not allowed to play during the actual games.

He still has to get a release from the coach in order to go.

Yeah, even though he is a walk-on, NCAA rules state he must get a release from Texas Tech to transfer. Seems kind of silly when you're not on scholarship to me, but that's the rule. Also, Texas Tech won't let him transfer to another Big 12 school.

RE: Troy Football Player Charged with Murder - slappycajun - 12-17-2013 09:17 AM

It's the rule if you are a student. You don't even have to be involved with an athletics program.

If the Texas Tech QB was a computer science major and didn't play sports but transferred to another school he would have to get a release and sit out. (I think)

There are groups it will fire up. I'm sure the "football culture" term is going to be brought up, as well as why an academically ineligible kid is involved with the program to begin with. CNN will find a professor at some college with an axe to grind, and they'll fill some air time with it.

A regular student does not have to sit out, nor do they have to be released. They simply need to enroll, and hope that the college they enrolled at will accept the other schools credits.

An athlete however is involved in an NCAA sanctioned competition, and has to be released from one school before he can play for another.

Wonder why he had a bunch of offers after his high school junior year,
yet was a walk on? Did poorly as senior in high school?

I think you have the QBs mixed up.
Brewer was supposed to be their starting QB but injured his back in pre-season and did not play until about their 8th/9th game (I think). Until then they were rotating Mayfield and Webb.
Mayfield was the walk-on from Lake Travis HS (Austin) and he was their starter for most of the season. It got a little messy when Brewer came back and then they started losing. Kingsbury then started using 3 QBs. When one wasn't getting it done he'd insert another.

I don't recall Mayfield getting hurt during their season.
