Snow games? - asucrutch23 - 12-09-2013 02:37 PM

The thread on the Eagles-Lions game got me thinking. At how many Sun Belt stadiums could you reasonably expect to see snow? Obviously Idaho and Georgia State are out, playing in domes. My guess in order of likelihood:

1. App State
...
... (JMU, Missouri State, and EKU)
...
2. Arkansas State
3. New Mexico State
...
...
4. ULM
5. Troy
6. Georgia Southern
7. Texas State
8. ULL
9. South Alabama

So with that I say...

Its rare for ASU to get winter weather during football season. Most of the time our big Winter Storm comes in January, with a small one in February.

The last time there was enough snow to cover the ground in Mobile was back in the '90s, getting any before Dec 1st is almost unheard of. I'd put us last.

Yeah, couldn't decide between ULL or USA for spot #9. I guess my point is that unless we add JMU, Mo State, or EKU, App State is by far and away the only potential snow game on most any Sun Belt schedule.

I can remember watching an Independence Bowl on TV while a blizzard was hitting it, that was about 13-14 years ago.

Not real sure if Troy has a better chance of getting snow then Mobile does. ULL probably has that better chance then either of those two or Ga Southern.

I was in school during the Great Blizzard of '96.

We gathered up all the snow between Delta 3 and 4 and made a two foot tall snowman.

There is an old adage in Texas. If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes
[Image: texas-weather.jpg]

That being said, rarely is there snow in our part of the state. Unlike North Texas which is covered under 4 inches of ice right now, we have stayed cold dry

years ago I was at a uta game against toledo or central michigan I think, which was being played after about 4-6" of snow.. I remember people in the stands bombarding the band with snowballs..one of those goofy games we had over at turnpike stadium while they were building our new one..not many braved the bad roads and snow. a couple of us took thermoses full of hot cider and rum..

Hopefully we move to Turner Field so we can be added to the list.

Mayor said that. City Council President says, not so fast and has mentioned GSU as a partner at least twice. Would allow for us to get all of athletics in one area.

Partner with who, what else are they going to put there that makes it viable for the city to keep it??? I know it's still a fairly new building, a shame to see it go, but what else could go there. Are there any talks of an ATL MLS team???

Here is the deal. Atlanta will get an MLS team and it will play in the Falcon's stadium. That deal is pretty much deal and being poorly kept under wraps.

That brings us to the Turner Field land. If you tear down Turner Field you have 90 acres. As usual real estate development is going gangbusters all over the city except for this area. It is south of the Capitol and GSU. The land to the South, East and West are low income neighborhods and 2 expressways (I-20 and (75/85 Downtown Connector). There is no existing retail, no grocery stores, absolutely nothing that will draw the Middle Class families Mayor Reed claims will fill this void. There have been plans and reports for 25 years trying to redevelop this area and no developer has touched it. That is probably because it would take a massive mix used development ala Atlantic Station to fill 90- 100 acres. At least Atlantic Station was Buckhead and Midtown adjacent which is why people purchased condos and townhomes there and why a huge amount of retail was injected. Everyone who lives here knows that isnt going to work with the Ted property. The best bet is a sort of mixed use development plus university athletics along the lines of FSU's College Town development.

Sorry for the wordy response....

I would love it because I have a feeling that watching football at the NuDome will be like watching a game in the mall food court.

I also believe that that size of a stadium would be a much better fit for GaSt. Plus it would have a huge jumbo tron.

Why would an MLS team want to play in an NFL stadium, that thing will be at least 3x's to big for them. They need a 20k seat stadium, not an 80k seat stadium. I would think they would be a better fit at a retro fitted Ted then the Falcon's stadium. Also, are the Falcons moving back outside, or are they building a replacement dome???
