Triple Option Question For Georgia Southern & Arkansas State Fans - TroyFootball05 - 12-08-2013 05:04 PM

How close is the option offense you (GSU) run to the option Auburn runs. Arkansas State fans might have some opinions as well. I'm told the TO won't work on this level (think back to "the spread won't work on this level"). Is Auburn only a small portion of the TO with GSU being the whole package?

I thought that Auburn ran more of a read option with some triple thrown in.

Auburn's offense forces you to respect the pass, but is still pretty similar to a triple option. We've suspected for a while that many of the handoffs that appear to be QB reads are actually called in the huddle. They almost never have a miscommunication.

GSU runs the set under center and would prefer not to throw the ball at all. The Auburn offense still utilizes the screen pass on occasion.

Auburn runs the read option very often and the build off of it. We run the midline with the QB and B back up the middle. Auburns triple option usually has the third option of a pass to a man running a stick or a go. Our third option is a pitch to an A back. Both teams prolific running opens up some big pass plays. Same principles though, run what you run very well and make the defense be disciplined enough to stop it.

On a side note...Malzahn's offense pretty much runs the same play over and over again. When the Bama game was analyzed, they realized that 80 percent of Auburn's run calls were actually the same play out of different looks.

That sounds about like Taggart ball. The same 6 plays off of different shifts.

When we played ULL last year, I think we ran the same play 5 or 6 times in a row. It was really remarkable. You'd think someone would figure out how to stop it, but the best I have seen is teams containing it a little.

The Gus-fense is basically the old Houston Veer. Move the QB out from center to a RB slot move the displaced RB to H or WR. But it's not triple option because there are only two options running, keep or handoff.

Under Paul Johnson Georgia Tech has struggled to find quarterbacks and wide receivers to give them a legitimate passing game I expect Georgia Southern to have the same issues. That's not to say they can't be successful with the TO, but they will struggle to play from behind(something they haven't had to do much at the FCS level) unless they can succeed in recruiting where GT has struggled.

How many times have I posted the 2012 quarter final vs ODU. We were two touchdowns down in the third qtr and won by two scores against the #1 passing offense in FCS. I know, I know, that was FCS granted, but the biggest difference is depth. Our passing like Techs isn't up to pre NFL standards like UGA's or Bama's because we simply don't throw the ball that much, we have before to great effect in prior coaching regimes. Now we were blessed with Jaybo Shaw who transferred from GT with CJM. Jaybo was a very well rounded quarterback, and an accurate passer when we did throw the ball. One of our TDs vs Bama was a big pass play. So although running the ball is our MO, it really has depended on personnel.
Our coaches will scheme to the strengths of our players.
Our red shirt freshman that shined against UF is more of a hybrid with similarities to both Jaybo and McKinnon.
We have some capable receivers. If we do open up the pass, look out, because that deep ball makes the dive that much more likely to be a huge gash right up the gut, or a receiver wide open behind everyone. It really is a thing of beauty when it all clicks on the same day.

GS passed very little in 2012 and 2013 with McKinnon at the helm because he was a RB playing QB. There is a reason he did not start the season in 2012 and Youyoute still came in during obvious passing situations in the semis against NDSU. Had Youyoute been able to get the option game down he would have stayed our #1 QB, but McKinnon had the advantage of being the #2 in 2010 while Youyoute got red shirted. Ellison looks to be more in the mold of our traditional QBs, guys that could run but also throw when they needed to.

Throwing against FCS secondaries and as a FCS power you had somewhat of a bargaining chip to attract the top FCS caliber QBs and WRs you might not otherwise be able to. "You may not get to throw/thrown to as much, but you'll be playing for championships."

The Sun Belt secondaries won't be exponentially better than the FCS secondaries, but they will be a noticeable step up, your OOC opponents secondaries will often be night and day different. As far as recruiting goes, I expect most QBs who can really throw it and WRs who can go up and get the ball who get other FBS offers will be tougher to land.

And I've watched enough GT to see how open a WR can get in the TO, I've also seen GT QBs miss wide open WRs by five yards or more on many occasions.

One thing to remember "bout Tech" is they have an academic challenge in recruiting that most schools other than the likes of Vandy don't have.
Let's face it, we're not recruiting guys that have to meet GTs academic rigor. Not that it really matters, other than in humor, but the probability of our having a nerd at QB is much lower.
Oh to have seen what Tim Tebow could have done in the Paul Johnson Offense.

RE: Triple Option Question For Georgia Southern & Arkansas State Fans - GSU Eagles - 12-08-2013 08:56 PM

Yes, GT has severe recruiting limitations as Business is the easiest major and most of the people in that major still had to score close to a 1400 (old scale) to get in the school.

I expect that we can quickly recruit players as talented as GTs.

Well, we have two players from 2013 starting in the nfl on defense and Ga Tech had nobody drafted. This year, we will have two players drafted and I doubt Ga Tech has more than that.

Now with us moving FBS, our recruiting will only improve.

What do you want to hear? You're right... Why do we run this inferior offense? Why did we move up to FBS? We won't be able to give away a single scholarship ever again, because no one in their right mind would ever want to play for us. WE'RE DOOMED! Anybody want to buy some Ga Southern gear? I'm pulling for WKU from now on. They've got this football thing figured out.

WE GET IT... YOU DON'T THINK THE TRIPLE OPTION WILL WORK... MOVE ALONG.

RE: Triple Option Question For Georgia Southern & Arkansas State Fans - arkstfan - 12-08-2013 10:00 PM

I think the option has a great future.

The NCAA practice limits cut down on the time to work against it and the nature of the modern team is that players want to make highlight plays and the minute you bite because you think you can blow someone up an option team is going to burn you like a wildfire. DC's have to be very patient in their calls. Now there is a defensive mindset that if you can't put a team in a third and long with a no gain or lost yards you aren't going to be able to force a punt if you are trying to force the issue, you get burned.
