Sun Belt Parity - FloridaJag - 12-02-2013 10:29 AM

I looked back over the season and it appears the SBC is in parity. ULL is of course the conference Champs. The SBC had several contest that could have gone either way during the season.

In Addition, we had winning records against the CUSA (3-2), MAC (2-0), and MWC (1-0). Plus we were (2-1)against Army/Navy. We did not play any AAC teams. So that would make us 8-3 against the other non P5 conference teams in FBS.

We went 1 - 1 against the ACC but got the doors beat of us by the SEC 1-8 with WKU win against Kentucky. We also went 0-5 against the Big 12. So 2-6 against the P5 is respectable.

South Alabama, Texas State, and Georgia State should be better next year. Idaho and New Mexico State will need to step up their games next year when the re-enter to SBC especially against western OOC opponents.

Ranking the 5 conferences based upon outcomes.

SEC
PAC 12
BIG 10
BIG 12
ACC

6. AAC
6. SBC
8. CUSA
9. MWC
10. MAC

The perception of the conference should be improved upon this year's results.

RE: Sun Belt Parity - Usajags - 12-02-2013 10:36 AM

Perception takes a long time to change. With our conference wins over the last couple of seasons, it is beginning. But until we get that ranked team and start beating P5 conferences regularly, perception will not change.

As a conference, we need to schedule more lower tier P5 schools to get what should be easier wins over those conferences, it still counts. Playing games against schools that are regularly in the top 10 prevent us from getting a foothold into the rankings.

RE: Sun Belt Parity - trueeagle98 - 12-02-2013 10:40 AM

Hopefully the new kids (speaking of GS and App) can live up to the hype and expectations and continue to win those OOC games.

GS fans are hoping to go at least 2-2, maybe 3-1 OOC next year.

NCST and Navy are winnable, especially NCST

GT is most likely a loss

That should help those rankings.
SavSt is a win. No way we lose to them.

Totally agree with this. Perception can take a generation to change (hopefully it doesn't). This applies to individual schools and conferences. Perception is reality even if the facts don't back it up. Unfortunately the SBC teams have a lot of parity and keep knocking each other down. It's just weird that a conference with 1 or 2 dominate teams is viewed better than a conference with a lot very good teams. Just need to keep winning more of those OOC games especially against the other G5 teams and lower level P5.

Agreed. UK sucks this year (or every year) but WKU got more mileage out of beating UK than the prestige that comes from defeating another member of the G5, even if the G5 team is better. The SBC needs to schedule and defeat lower level Big 10, Big 12, ACC and SEC teams, such as UK, Ark, Kansas, Illinois, Wake Forest, Purdue, etc. which should provide additional exposure and increase respect for the conference.

ULM has Wake Forest at home. Georgia Southern's win over Florida kind of gives us two wins over the SEC this year.

I think that WKU does as well. If not next year then the next. Here's to two smackdowns of the Illini by us low level G5 teams.04-cheers

There is no doubt that we have parity in the league.

Until the Sun Belt can get a team or two to crack the top 25, the Sun Belt will always be #10 in most people's minds.

AAC, MAC, MWC have nationally recognized programs. Even C-USA has teams like Marshall, UTEP etc (I wouldn't disagree that the SB is equal or better than C-USA now).

RE: Sun Belt Parity - GoApps70 - 12-10-2013 08:08 PM

What the problem will be is the SBC will probably have more teams with bad records the next couple of years.

RE: Sun Belt Parity - Louisiana99 - 12-10-2013 11:40 PM

Need more bowl tie ins and more tv money. As long as we are last in both those categories, we will always be perceived as last. The sunbelt is only 12 years old and was created with move ups and startups and has continued to be just that. Until we can stop that and gain or attract members from other conferences we will be perceived as last. We will never attract members from other conferences unless our current commissioner can gain tv money and tie ins at least equal to cusa. This will most likely never happen, cusa knows they will always be able to garner more tv money bc they invite media markets. They knew by doing this, they would have more tv money and tie ins over the belt, thereby keeping their better "perception"regardless if they prove it on the field.

Having bad teams isn't necessarily a "bad" thing, though. As others have noted, you need one or two HEADS ABOVE THE REST strong teams to get national attention to bring the media attention.

This is true. Parity itself is not necessarily a bad thing, however, if the parity occurs over multiple seasons. Parity within a single season means that no heads are above the rest and does not lead to national attention. If one team establishes itself as heads above the rest one season and another team the next season, that is ideal for the conference. This is very much like what C-USA had until the recent expansion, with 3 different teams ranked in the top 25 going into the conference championship game from 2009-2012.

Not saying it's bad for having those true national contenders but still will draw down the SBC in comparisons when you have more losing teams than you have had or even compared to other conferences.
