Mock 2014 Schedule - chiefsfan - 08-20-2013 02:16 PM

Because so many here, including many of our new fans are rightfully eager to know their 2014 schedules, and since the SBC typically doesn't release till March 1st, Ive decided to create a mock 2014 schedule for all 11 SBC teams.

The goal of this mock is mainly to gain an idea of how the scheduling will work. With 6 teams based in the West, and 5 in the East, it creates an odd number and makes scheduling very difficult.

Here are the Basic principles I worked with, that I strongly believe the conference will follow as well.

1. All existing rivalries will be accommodated if at all possible. Especially Geographic rivalries such as Ga So/App ULL/ULM and USA/Troy

2. No School will have to play at both NMSU and Idaho in the same year.

3. In turn, No school will have to play at Both Ga Southern and Ga State in the same year.

4. All East schools are guaranteed to play each other to guarantee a tight geographic alignment. Meanwhile, The 4 West Schools in the tight Alignment (ULL, ULM, ASU, Tx State) all are guaranteed to play each other.

What I discovered:

1. Ive worked almost every conceivable angle, and its impossible for every East school to play only one of NMSU or Idaho. Likewise, Its impossible for all West schools to play BOTH NMSU and Idaho.

2. East/West rivalries such as ULL/USA and Troy/ASU cannot be guaranteed in a given cycle.

I will post the mock schedule I created in the next two posts

Excellent post! As a minor suggestion, you might go through and bold the games that are "guaranteed"--specifically the ones identified in your rule 1 and 4.

The resulting Georgia Southern schedule would be:

@ NC State
@ Georgia Tech
@ Navy
vs Duquesne

vs App State
vs USA
vs ULM
vs Texas State
@ Ga State
@ Troy
@ NMSU
@ stAte

Thanks for doing this!

I know this is just a mock from your own mind...but I'd be so pumped for that schedule for us.

Good Job! I'll be disappointed if GaSou doesn't get ULL in the first two years though.

You certainly could play ULL. The point of the mock schedule was to figure out rivalries, and work out games with NMSU and Idaho. Its certainly possible that the two teams you guys sit out will change.

Isn't there a rule that says transitional have to have a min. number of home games? I thought I read that some time around the time this year's schedule came out.

5 home games, that's why you guys are getting 4 league home games this year.

RE: Mock 2014 Schedule - fencereagle - 08-20-2013 04:18 PM

What is your reasoning behind your #3 rule of schools not playing Ga St and Ga So in the same year? I'm not questioning the legitimacy of such a position, I'd just like a bit more insight into why you think that rule would be necessary.

Realistically, I did to even things out. However, I do know the league likes to make attempts to keep teams from traveling to the same state twice in a given year. My thought process was that an West school would ideally like to avoid multiple trips to Georgia.

It may or may not happen, but you can bet that it will be considered.

RE: Mock 2014 Schedule - SkullyMaroo - 08-20-2013 04:39 PM

I know there is probably going to be no way to avoid two games at same location in back to back years. And I know this is only a mock schedule... But have you considered the location of the game the previous year? I see these games repeated from 2013:

Troy @ Georgia State
Georgia State @ ULM
USA @ Troy
ULM @ Troy
Louisiana @ USA
Texas State @ Louisiana

At the very least Troy needs to be @ USA for rivalry purposes. We shouldn't have to travel there twice in a row. If we are protecting the rivalries we need to go ahead and balance the location out too.

I didn't notice the Troy/USA game. I tried to balance all the rivalries. If you switched the App State game with each team, it would even things out.

Most of the rest were just products of it being impossible to prevent traveling twice in a row. I believe you can fix Texas State/ULL as well, but the rest are out of division games and will be tougher to fix.

RE: Mock 2014 Schedule - chiefsfan - 08-20-2013 04:51 PM

I edited the schedule to fix the Troy/USA glitch by reversing their games with App. Looking at it though, I believe that is the only double trip I can fix. I cant swap Georgia State/Troy without making Georgia State/USA a double trip, and I sort of consider USA/Ga State a semi rivalry.

Nicely done, chiefsfan. (Interesting obstacles that came up with this...) Thanks!

RE: Mock 2014 Schedule - Native Georgian - 08-20-2013 07:31 PM

I think that Idaho and NMSU are so far removed from the SBC footprint, that it really is only fair for each of the other 9 teams to play those 2 teams with an equal frequency.

Under my mock scheduling...they will. East teams will make an extra trip in a cycle every 5 years. Otherwise, its every other year. West teams will make a trip every year, except for a once every 5 year cycle when they will get a year off.

Why nine conference games eight is more likely.
The SBC could go to seven conference games with a 12th member only one crossover game.Having five non conference games would be sweet.
The SBC if a 7 game schedule was created could allow members to play each other out of conference .That would be rare but for rivalry or scheduling ease it may help.Out of conference play one money game one FCS game then three toss-up games helps get more teams bowl eligible.
