Success on a Budget - WinstonTheWolf - 08-05-2013 06:42 PM

Imagine if stAte's relatively new leadership can significantly increase revenues over the the levels they inherited . . . hearing corporate sponsorship up 100%

7th in the nation in bang for the buck in this study:

I'm surprised to see Idaho #13 on that list.

RE: Success on a Budget - Usajags - 08-05-2013 09:00 PM

Idaho needs to fix their stadium situation or give up on FBS football. That thing is embarrassing. Spend some money on that thing, or build something else.

They just finished renovating it, with an 11,000 seat expansion on the way. It's 15 years overdue.

Idaho just decided to expanded their seating by 11,000?
That would give them 27,000, if so.
Odd we have never heard that.

This isn't totally about football (though all schools in that ranking had that sport). Idaho finished second in the WAC Commissioners Cup last year, so they have a very successful overall athletic department.

I'm not debating that. But i would rather own a 2 bedroom house than rent a 5 bedroom w/ a pool. Home ownership: The American Dream.

04-bow

I agree with MTPiKapp, Ladd is better then Kibbie and it will do until we get our OCS. And Kibbie is no 2 bedroom in the burbs, it's a shack that doesn't fit in the neighborhood.

Ladd>>>>Kibbie dome

Ladd is an old football stadium now owned by the city and used by South Alabama. USA didn't field a football team until 2009 and didn't think to build a stadium, shame on them, but they were offered Ladd to use. There are old college football stadiums all over the country in dire need of repair. I've seen the Kibbie Dome and it's an over-sized barn. No comparison. Floyd Stadium at MTSU is an old stadium also that probably use some repairs.

I hope Idaho can expand to 27k. That would be great. I also hope it is for another conference in a few years. Nothing personal, just not a ggod fit for Sun Belt. On to USA. Are you guys seriously working towards an on-campus facility? Couldn't you work something out with the city to make some improvements? If you are there for the next 5 years (assume you are), I sure wish you could put in some amenities and then maybe take them with you once you leave. Sound system is bad, no jumbo, concessions are bad. Of course I have never had the pleasure of sitting on the home side. Last 2 years stAte got the visitor side so that TV could show a full stadium.

1. Colorado - 1.46
2. Oregon - 1.36
3. San Diego State - 1.23
4. West Virginia - 1.21
5. USC - 1.14
6. North Texas - 1.11
7. Arkansas State - 1.09
8. Kent State - 1.00
9. San Jose State - .9541
10. Oklahoma State - .9494
11. Boise State - .9493
12. Western Kentucky - .9453
13. Idaho - .8640
14. New Mexico - .8543
15. Florida - .8431
16. Texas State - .8375
17. Central Michigan - .8028
18. New Mexico State - .7953

22. Kansas - .7139
23. Eastern Michigan - .6954
24. Connecticut - .6619
25. Arkansas - .6539

And I have a major complaint about the assumption of linear dollar values in this study due to the fact that large scale cash outlays (such as new athletic facilities) benefit all sports...

What you're saying is something we've discussed time and again on our messageboard, JagsJungle.com, but the city and the Ladd BOD don't get along. Heck, the Ladd BOD can't agree on much of anything. An OCS is a must, but who knows when it'll get financed. Meanwhile Ladd will have to do.

Have seen talk of this for a long time, but never seen their administration state that it would be done. So not expecting that
it's in the works.

Odd we have never heard that.

It's in the master plan, along with a 6000 seat bball arena. The current cost estimate is 35mil for each. The expansion would include a dig down, balconies all around, and endzone seating. The arena would be connected to the Kibbie dome via the student concourse.

RE: Success on a Budget - arkstfan - 08-07-2013 09:50 PM

There are just so many variables in an athletic budget that don't allow for a straight-up financial comparison.

Scholarships. The cost of room and board varies widely. Last time I checked North Texas would spend about a quarter million more than ASU for the same number of scholarships.
Then some athletic departments are charged more for out-of-state students than in-state, sometimes with in-state waivers for children of alums or residents of some border areas. Some schools charge the department the equivalent of in-state no matter where the athlete is from. Arkansas State bills the athletic department as if all are in-state.

Local salary conditions impact what you have to pay an administrative assistant or pay temps to work concessions.

Some places the local police budget for cops to handle traffic and security other places you have to reimburse or hire off-duty.

If a bond issue paid for an arena or stadium you may be paying rent to provide the income stream to support the bond. If it is paid off you may only be paying an actual cost fee or actual expenses.

Your fund-raising arm may be billed to athletics or be a sub-group of your development office.

And on and on and on.

I thought #2 Oregon got a lot of Nike money? Idaho at #13? New Mexico rated at #14. I dunno about this. Nebraska, Notre Dame, Texas, Arizona don't make the list?
