The K5 have given the G5 an incentive to expand - Lurker Above - 04-08-2013 07:17 PM

so they can go to 20 schools and have a conference semi-finals playoff.

In an interview a few days ago, Idaho athletic director Rob Spear spoke how each G5 conference would get $1 million per member no matter how large it got. Now Conference USA is expanding. The K5 knew the G5 conference would grow with these new rules so it will be politically easier to go to 20 teams and have a conference semi finals, jmo.

“There’s about 82 million in the first year that’s going to go to that group of five (non-BCS conferences),” Spear said. “The majority of it, roughly 60 million, will be divided based on how many teams you have in a conference. If you have 12 teams you get 12 million; if you have 10 you get 10 million. So there is not the stress on the conferences to not add teams anymore because if you add a team, you’re going to get more money, and you’re not going to penalize the other schools. Before, conferences wouldn’t add because they would have to divide their share among more teams.”

“That has generated a significant amount of more revenue,” Spear said. “Granted, the five BCS conferences and Notre Dame get the majority of that, but just being in an FBS conference now, it almost seems at a minimum, you’re going to receive about $1 million in conference revenue, and that’s a lot more significant than it ever was when we were a member of the WAC, under the old agreement. That was the WAC’s downfall — we couldn’t attract membership because there just wasn’t enough conference revenue.”

Well I guess that settles the argument we had about the $12M for the SBC being $1M per team or $12M for each G5 conference.

PS - shorten the title

He's definitely clear this time.

Still like to see it from more than one AD to be convinced as its inconsistent with how they have done it in the past and it doesn't make sense for conferences to give up money just because a different conference expands (the $1 million has to come from somewhere). Even ADs have been wrong about details on things like this.

I'd like to hear from a commissioner. If 60 million is being divided up, as of now, then yes each school gets roughly $1 million. However, if there are 12 FSC schools being call up, where is that $$ coming from to satisfy the $1 million/school?

Now granted from a previous thread, that the amount the Go5 gets is a percentage and it was stated that the amount (in $ terms not %) would be increase over the years, so yes..in essence, a conference can still expand to equal a $1 million/school payment. However, those conference with still 12 schools with get more than $1 million.

So, I still think this is setup as a per conference deal. where the $60 million is divided by 5 conferences so each conference gets $12 million.

Sounds like every FBS member is guaranteed $1 mill from the nBCS contract...as long as you are part of a conference. Wouldn't this make it worthwhile for Army to join The America...why not get paid?

It also sounds like as schools are added, the G5 representative payout is decreased..which is where the money would come from for that school.

If a group of 60 expands by 1, that's a 1/60th reduction, or $16,667. If the payment is growing faster than FCS schools are promoted to FBS schools, though, its not a reduction in payment but rather a reduction in the rate of growth of the payment.

So no reason for the SBC to expand anymore then?

Kontract 5?

RE: The K5 have given the G5 the green light to expand - blunderbuss - 04-09-2013 02:11 PM

I thought the payout was divied up based on the # of conferences (and thus distibuted to members) not based on individual FBS members.

This is correct. I verified this through two separate athletic departments in two separate Gof5 conferences.

The $60 million is divided amongst 5 conferences ($12 million per conference).

Increasing the number of schools dipping into that pot only makes the payout per school smaller, which will only serve to widen the gap between the haves and the have nots. So I can see why the big conferences don't care how many schools the Go5 invite. It only helps to separate them further...

Exactly what I'm thinking. This article / Idaho quote makes no sense whatsoever from a G5 standpoint. There's no incentive whatsoever to keep increasing the payout just to support more FCS moveups.

It's pretty safe to say this story (or maybe it's interpretation) is 01-rivals.

Yes, a capital K is shorthand for contract.

It is used a lot in the legal profession.

Sorry for the confusion.

I disagree. There will either be a hard cap on the number of FCS move-ups, or more likely, a calculation has been made that there is only a few schools who could make the transition to FBS before the gate closes for several years. If the K5 do not have to share the money with any of these FCS move-ups, and if more of the these schools further dilute the G5, and it makes it easier for the G5 to get there 20 school conferences complete with 4 divisions and a 4 team conference playoff, why would the K5 not incentivize the G5 to expand?

Ussually, anytime the pool of teams in the top level of football exceeds 100, it gets trimmed down. We are way past due for a pruning of the top ranks. It will be brutal and will likely trim 30-60 schools from the top level of football.

For me, I would believe it more strongly if its an AD from a CUSA or MAC school that says it ... if the formula is $1m per school up to $12m max, then its still "$1m per school" to the Sunbelt. Its only CUSA and the MAC which would be above the ceiling part of that formula.

They've already trimmed the Group of Five from the top ranks, they've just done it by stealth rather than by frontal assault.

I agree with both points.

I would say the networks have done it. The gap between the bottom AQ conference and the rest has grown to over $16 million/school/year when it was about $12 million from the top of the AQs to the Sun Belt just a few years ago and only a couple million from Big East to the top of the non-AQs.
