The CAA is dwindling. Wonder what James Madison is thinking?

Ugh. Yahoo Sports....

RE: George Mason going to A10 - Tom in Lazybrook - 03-24-2013 07:20 PM

I heard JMU already said "no thanks' to the Sun Belt. Unless they've got a bid in their pocket from the MAC, I think that would be an epically stupid decision on their part.

Future CAA

Towson, W&M, JMU, Drexel (if not poached by the A-10), Hoftra (if not poached by the A-10), Northeastern (if not poached by the A-10), UNCW, and Delaware.

Of course, they could add teams, but are there's aren't any equivalent replacements for the teams that are leaving. Especially in basketball.

CAA is going to end up going to war with the Southern and Big South Conferences here soon.

This is great news for anyone wanting to pressure JMU to go FBS.

Hypothetical question would current members rather have JMU or NMSU should WKU leave?

My guess is the Eastern Schools will want JMU, and the Western schools will want NMSU. Many forget that ASU, ULM, and ULL all have great relationships with NMSU from their last time around in the league.

As a JMU fan, depressed that our admin is being so stupid and dumb. Hopefully JMU makes a move to FBS, because it is depressing-to the point of maybe not even donate anymore if a move doesn't happen.

That was my assumption. Is the NMSU football only something Belt members are pushing or is that what NMSU prefers?

Virginia is nice, but i want New Mexico State.

RE: George Mason going to A10 - HCJag - 03-24-2013 08:38 PM

I don't see what the big hangup is with adding NMSU. It's just 1 school out of the footprint, one game per year (for football), the travel would only be every other year, and the western conference members seem to support them. Good basketball (which we desperately need), decent baseball, and FBS already.

Las Cruces is 1250 miles from Mobile. FIU was 800. JMU would be 870. It's not that big of a difference for me. You're probably going to fly either way, and I'd doubt that the travel costs are any different.

RE: George Mason going to A10 - 8993 - 03-24-2013 08:48 PM

I don't see this changing whether NMSU gets an invite or not, but I'd personally rather have JMU over NMSU. James Madison brings a decent football team and pretty good basketball team. New Mexico brings with it a good basketball team, but an awful football team. I'd rather have an all around good school, rather than having a school that is only being brought in because of their basketball program. I know that location is a big thing for the SBC, but I see the east being where the SBC needs to expand, not the west.

RE: George Mason going to A10 - troy4ever - 03-24-2013 10:38 PM

I would rather see NMSU than JMU. Some want to say that the Sunbelts future lies in the east. I feel that's true only to the degree of an App State and Ga Southern add. But I think our true future is retaining what members we have by keeping the western schools happy as well and expanding west.

Exactly.

It's a huge difference for the schools when you consider it's a plane ride then a bus for all sports. Just an uneducated guess but I would think at least 80 to 100k added to the travel cost for all sports

False. JMU does not bring decent basketball. I found the last 7 years worth of RPI on the NCAA website. The average RPI over the last 7 years is 202. Only two years were they in the top 150 (2010-2011 with 90 and 2008-2009 with 122). RPI by year has been 182, 261, 90, 241, 122, 218, and 300 (going backwards 2013-2007).

Contrast that to NMSU who has an average RPI of 93, and finished in the top 150 all 7 years. Their RPI by year has been 55, 59, 146, 56, 120, 142, and 70. Just bring in NMSU please.

Just undoing 10 years of terrible hires. In the 1980s-1990s, JMU was one of the top mid-majors. We are building a brand new arena, just won the conference and went to the NCAA's, and have great freshmen in the program.

They are thinking either:
1. "We need to look at going FBS, the Sun Belt is so desperate we could demand that they pay us to go there."
OR
2. "When the desperate Sun Belt takes Appy and GaSo, we will be able to have our pick of the litter from what is left of the Southern Conference - no need to panic."

I wonder if Charleston is now reconsidering its decision to move to the CAA?
