We're gonna get freaking smoked come conference play... Maybe, MAYBE ETSU finishes 5th. FGCU is really good. It's just a matter of time for them before football is added and they're moving onto bigger and better things.

RE: Baseball by the Numbers - MercerFan - 02-26-2013 08:05 PM

FGCU is looking really good, but this conference will have at least 1 at large bid. Plus, FGCU has not done well in the Conference Tournament in the past.

RE: Baseball by the Numbers - Buccaneerlover - 02-27-2013 07:46 PM

I think it will as long as teams keep winning OOC games. The ETSU loss at Tennessee yesterday was really bad. They pitched a freshman.

They pitched three, and Eichler pitched well. That's the whole purpose of midweek games; ETSU and UT threw 13 pitchers between them. A loss in a one-off Tuesday game to Tennessee is not going to destroy our RPI and should not be used to weigh the team's chances for the year.

The freshman I would be concerned about is Griffin Kreig, who got hammered by Marist yesterday and is sporting an ERA north of 8. I wouldn't be shocked to see him supplanted by Logan Rice by mid-March. Regardless, ETSU should be okay in league play. They won't be great, but they'll make the tournament and should win a couple of games.

Well we learned a couple things this week... FL Gulf Coast is mostly a fraud. They are a solid team, but not a Top 50 team. Maybe not Top 100.

RE: Baseball by the Numbers - MercerFan - 03-04-2013 03:43 PM

I'll try to update the main post every Monday when the new polls come out. Updated now as of March 4th.

- Florida Gulf Coast managed to stay ranked. I can't believe that, as they looked pretty average this week against some low end competition.

- North Florida made a big move up this week.

- Mercer has a monster test on Tuesday @ Georgia Tech.

That would be great if you would do that. Look forward to seeing how rankings and rpi evolve over the season.

No offense but two one run losses hardly say "fraud" to me. FAU is 6-5 with losses to Miami (FL), Alabama, NC State and Coastal Carolina. Manhattan is terrible, but no offense everyone can lose a game by a single run. Just for reference, Mercer was shut out at home by Alabama State and while Alabama State has a winning record...look who they have played. #2 Arkansas lost to Pacific (4-6) by a run, are they a fraud? (5-7) San Francisco beat #11 Arizona...is Arizona a fraud? I am just saying losing a one run game is hardly enough for "fraud" status...if they continually lose game after game...then maybe. Don't let a game here and there blur the vision especially in baseball.

Ok maybe "fraud" was too strong of a word. I just wasn't impressed with their Manhattan series. Could have easily gone 2-2 at home. Scored an average of 3 runs a game. You're right that baseball can change drastically in the short term, so let's see how they do this week.

RE: Baseball by the Numbers - MercerFan - 03-05-2013 04:23 AM

Had to add Mercer's first ever National Ranking. Checking in at #28 in the Top 30 poll. FGCU is #29 in the same poll. http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2013/03/04/2013-ncbwa-division-1-poll-march-4th/

It is an impressive stat for the A-SUN: Only 8 conferences are represented in the Top 30. The Atlantic Sun has 2 teams in it.

March 11 --

- Gulf Coast is firmly in the national rankings as they appeared in all major polls.

- This is the first week the RPI is considered somewhat reliable.

- Conference play starts this upcoming weekend

March 18 --

- Florida Gulf Coast played 1 game last week, and lost to an NAIA school.
--- Even so, FGCU remains ranked at #26. Interesting to note, the mid major poll places Mercer 3 spots ahead of FGCU.

- ETSU's RPI has been gradually on the rise.

- Stetson's record isn't too bad, but their RPI is BAD.

RE: Baseball by the Numbers - March 18 - MercerFan - 04-02-2013 12:40 AM

I missed an update, but here's the April 1st. FGCU was ranked this week and the week I missed, so that means they've been in the polls 6 weeks now. Yet they continue to rank below Mercer in the Mid-Major poll. A-Sun standings are tight as they usually are. These teams seem to "beat up" on each other and not allow a single team or two to run away with it.

RE: Baseball by the Numbers - April 1 - MercerFan - 04-14-2013 12:48 PM

Mercer sweeps FGCU. It will be interesting to see how this impacts rankings. All season FGCU has had the nod over Mercer. I can't see how they justify that now.

As a baseball fan, what about UNF? They are first place with the league's best offense and a pitching staff that from my understanding has been missing two weekend starters for the majority of the year (I think they actually pitched in relief this weekend). The Ospreys already have series wins over Mercer and ETSU so that's essentially an extra game in their pocket.

This league could have multiple teams this year.
