Request - Restaurant Suggestions - Tiger1983 - 01-10-2013 01:42 PM

My wife and I plan to visit Birmingham to attend the UAB/Memphis game. We are staying at the Sheraton on Richard Arrington Road.

I would appreciate any close-by restaurant suggestions for lunch and dinner. Thank you.

I would recommend Slice Pizza in Lakeview, John's City Diner which is also on Richard Arrington (not in walking distance though), and El Barrio on 2nd Ave N.

J Clyde if you're beer drinkers

There is not anything that I know of in that general area. But, hop in the car, go east 1 block to 22nd St N (Richard Arrington Blvd was 21st St N) and head south (the avenue numbers will descend 8th, 7th, 6th etc) until you cross a bridge, then the avenue numbers will ascend (3rd, 4th, 5th etc). Stay on 22nd St S (it goes from N to S after the bridge), cross University Blvd and head up the hill (still 22nd St S), then down a small hill. Take a right at Magnolia Ave S. go almost 2 blocks. There will be a parking deck on your right. Park here and spend the afternoon enjoying the area of Historic 5 Points South! Food (Cosmo's Pizza, Jim n Nick's BBQ, etc) and beverages abound! I live in Michigan and spend 2 weeks in this area in Nov. You probably will find some better lodging for your next trip to B'ham in this area also. Have fun.

Close-by as in walking distance? None.

A few blocks away: I second El Barrio (homerun meals: chorizo meatloaf, rice and chicken soup). Others worth mentioning on 20th Street: Brick & Tin (get the brisket, trust me!), and Cafe Dupont.

Several blocks away (as in Southside, Five Points area): Highland's Bar & Grill (said to have one of the best burgers in town), Chez Fon Fon (great prices during lunch for the quality), Hot and Hot, 26 (Salmon BLT), Ocean, and a host of others that will accomodate every price point.

I would guess that you will be there the day of the game, leaving the morning after.

I also am guessing you will be checking in prior to the game instead of after the game.

There are more & more options popping up north of town in the Fultondale & Gardendale area, however I am assuming you will be coming in on Corridor X from Memphis through 78 hwy, etc which is south of these 2 areas.

However, if you wish to pursue this, up 65 North a few miles there is Fultondale & a few miles further is Gardendale exit.

In Fultondale, there is a new On Tap Sports Grill on the Walker's Chapel Road exit (you will notice this exit easily because of a lot of stuff there) Also at this exit is Logan's Roadhouse, Chili's, a Japanese Restaurant (Stix, I believe), Outback, O'Charley's, etc. The On Tap will be on your right just past Whataburger.

Further north on 65 is Gardendale (Fieldstown Road Exit) where you have Ruby Tuesday's to the right, there is a new Buffalo Wild Wings to your right as well, & Cracker Barrel to your left.

I'm not a bar dude & opt towards more of the family type eating places, so take it for what its worth.

Both of these aren't too far from the arena & traffic really isn't that bad.

I second all of those choices. and the J Clyde also.

If you go to John's make sure to save room for dessert and get the white chocolate bread pudding.

RE: Request - Restaurant Suggestions - BAMANBLAZERFAN - 01-10-2013 05:05 PM

B'ham is a numbered street town for the most part with 21st (Arrington) "one way" north and 22nd "one way" south (toward the mountains). Downtown avenues are set up one way east for odd numbers (3 & 5) and one way west for even numbers (2,4,6). First Ave. north is two way.
There are several new spots on 2nd Ave north (one way west) between 22nd and 24th streets downtown;
Lakeview district on 29th street south between 7th Ave. and 8th Ave south;
5 Points South on 20th street south and 9th to 11th Ave south;
plus there are a lot of eateries around the UAB Medical center 5th Ave south to 11th ave south and 22nd street (Fish Market on 6th) to 18th street south.
There are far more good places to eat, drink and "hang out" in these places than you will have time to experience.
BTW, Bartow arena is on 6th ave south and between 13th and 14th streets.

The new beer production & sales places in the Avondale area (41st Street south to Avondale park @ 5th Ave. south) and their associated food purveyors have been established since I moved from Crestwood in 2003 so I will defer to those who go there to recommend them.

I'll 3rd Slice plus Moe's next to it if in a bbq mood, Slice also has some good beer choices. Surin in 5pts is good. There's also a Metro Prime Steakhouse in 5pts though I've not been able to go to it yet. Mellow Mushroom or Cosmo's Pizza in 5pts are good.

If breakfast is your thing, try the Original Pancake House, not far from where you'll be staying, corner of 20th Street South and 11th Avenue.

RE: Request - Restaurant Suggestions - thebernreuter - 01-11-2013 12:05 AM

Come to Mugshots in Vestavia. If you get there in time for lunch, I'll cook it for you.

RE: Request - Restaurant Suggestions - demiveeman - 01-11-2013 08:57 AM

Slice is a complete waste of time.

RE: Request - Restaurant Suggestions - uabrsc3 - 01-11-2013 10:05 AM

Hopefully you all will be back in future easons when the new entertainment district will be open with some cool restaurants and clubs...Another good reason to keep our rivalry alive! COGS

Buffalo Wild Wings is in Gardendale on 65 north at the Fieldstown Road exit.

Take a right on the exit & it will be about a block or so on your right, right behind a closed Shoney's building.
