How would you schedule - chrisattsu - 08-16-2012 06:21 PM

The Idaho thread got me thinking. In the WAC we had 6 weeks of Conference play and 6 weeks for whatever.

Now that the WAC is done and we are moving to the Sun Belt, we will have to play a 9 game conference schedule. This leaves us a max of three OOC games.

If you (as AD) only had three weeks for OOC play How would you spend it / who would you play?
Regional teams? OOC rival? Cupcakes? Powerhouses? or Do you want a bye?

RE: How would you schedule - Dedsquirrl - 08-16-2012 06:34 PM

This year South went with 1 FCS and 2 Punches in the Face. We also landed a 13th game vs Hawaii using their special rule.

I personally would like mixing in more home and homes vs other "mid-majors".
And then one game against a big wig that will only give us a 2 for 1.
So a home and home vs UNLV and UAB and a trip to Oklahoma state (Okie State did give us a 2 for 1).
Get bowl eligible with some FBS OOC opponents. Get a chance at an upset with a pay me game. And I know real AD's don't think about this stuff, but games vs MWC and CUSA to get our conference some recognition if we win.

Get rid of the FCS game.
Don't sign deals with schools that won't give you a return trip.
Well....... unless Alabama or Auburn came calling.
But the Big Ten would invite us to replace Penn State before that happened.

1 FCS game
1 Money Game
1 game that is against a mid-major or lower AQ team.

RE: How would you schedule - TampaKnight - 08-16-2012 07:40 PM

Here is an example schedule I would go for!

Home
Idaho State (FCS)
Utah State (Mountain West)
NMSU (assume Mountain West when AFA/Fresno leaves)
BYU (Independent)

Away
Army (Independent)
Notre Dame (Independent)
Navy (Independent)
LSU (SEC)
Boise State (Big East)
Washington State (Pac-12)
Texas State (Sun Belt)
Georgia State (Sun Belt)

RE: How would you schedule - Ole Blue - 08-16-2012 08:45 PM

I think a schedule like this might be a good idea.

VS Lamar (FCS school)
AT Oklahoma State (BCS school)
VS Northern Illinois (Non-BCS mid-major school)

Are you scheduling for Idaho, or for SBC schools, because the question is how would you create a schedule for SBC schools with 9 league games upcoming.

Pretty sure the SBC is playing 9 league games for a full round-robin.

Now if you'd just get around to inviting those 2 FCS teams, you'd have a nice divisional split and could do 8 league games.

Just sayin. :)

RE: How would you schedule - NCowl - 08-17-2012 07:10 AM

No Panama is right, even though USA is transitioning our schedules this year have us not playing one team. For instance, FAU will not play ASU this year. So we keep 4 OOC teams on the schedule, and this will stay with 2 teams leaving to CUSA but gain 2 more teams.

RE: How would you schedule - NCowl - 08-17-2012 07:16 AM

On that note, I think...
1 powerhouse money maker (SEC)
2 mid level winable games (CUSA or Big East)
1 easier (FCS or very low FBS)

GO OWLS!

You do know he's talking about this year's schedule, right?
The FCS team in question is Nicholls State.

The eight games was only for this year. It is supposed to go to nine games next year, but that may be delayed as we transition in the new programs.
I hope we do get back to eight games eventually. More slots to wheel and deal with and get better home opponents.

Yup, Texas State will have full championship eligibility. Heck, they are hosting the Soccer and Cross Country Championships in 2013.

I completely flew past the point of the thread. Yes, I was scheduling for Idaho.

RE: How would you schedule - EatEmUp - 08-18-2012 07:08 PM

Game 1- Home-and-home game vs. bottom MWC/C-USA/MAC team or Independent

Game 2- Away body bag game from top 6 BCS conference (SEC, BIG, Big XII, ACC, Big East, Pac12) or Top 25 Team

Game 3- 2-for-1 away game vs. high end MWC/C-USA/MAC team or Independent that is geographically close.

A bye after week 6 (if possible).

My "dream" schedule:

Year 1
Game 1- vs. Eastern Michigan
Game 2- @ Houston (for Houston alumni)
Game 3- @ UTEP
Game 4- vs. MT
Game 5- vs. ULM
Game 6- @ WKU
BYE
Game 7- @ Troy
Game 8- vs. Georgia State
Game 9- vs. FAU
Game 10- @ stAte
Game 11- @ USA
Game 12- vs. Louisiana

Year 2
Game 1- vs. Army (would go to West Point in year 4)
Game 2- @ TCU or SMU (for Dallas alumni)
Game 3- vs. UTEP
Game 4- @ MT
Game 5- @ ULM
Game 6- vs. WKU
BYE
Game 7- vs. Troy
Game 8- @ Georgia State
Game 9- @ FAU
Game 10- vs. stAte
Game 11- vs. USA
Game 12- @ Louisiana

Year 3
Game 1- @ Eastern Michigan
Game 2- @ Texas A&M (for all non-UT Texas fans COGS)
Game 3- vs. UTEP
Game 4- vs. MT
Game 5- vs. ULM
Game 6- @ WKU
BYE
Game 7- @ Troy
Game 8- vs. Georgia State
Game 9- vs. FAU
Game 10- @ stAte
Game 11- @ USA
Game 12- vs. Louisiana

I am one of the few TxSt fans who wouldn't mind not playing UTSA. They've already demonstrated that they think they're better than us by asking that if we did play, all games (or a 2-for-1) would be at the Alamodome. F that...lol. They don't realize that part of a rivalry is facing the rival team and their rabid fans on their home turf equally. So F the Runners. Plus, facing each other wouldn't expand either recruiting or fan base...so why do it?

But we do need a rival. Louisiana, I know you have ULM already...but I'd like to have you as a rival. A natural border war...or maybe stAte! I guess we'll have to see how things play out on the field.

I think that gives us a good mix of home and away games for our fans...what do you think?

What are the rules regarding conference championship games? Is it 10 football members?

*editted: Forgot Middle Tennessee on our schedule. My bad.

RE: How would you schedule - TheRevSWT - 08-18-2012 08:21 PM

If you are talking 9 conference games, that leaves 3 OOC (or 4, if you get Hawaii).

Given that, for us, at least, I'd LOVE middle road TX teams on alternating Home and Homes in the Houston and DFW areas (UNT, SMU in Dallas, UH, Rice in Houston). If you flip it right, then you always have a home game in Texas.

For the third? I'd like a CUSA/MWC team. Ideally, in a home and home, or a 2-1 type deal.

That way, no body bag games (not a fan, though I see their benefit. I'm counting on us being able to self-fund through suites, donations, and merchandise sales), all are winnable (maybe not in the early goings, but soon we should be able to win those), and are against teams our fans would be excited about.
