SBC Spring Meeting 2012, Destin FL - ManzanoWolf - 05-19-2012 02:01 PM

The Sun Belt Conference is scheduled to convene this week in Destin, Fla., for its annual spring meetings. While there, the league’s school presidents, athletic directors and other officials will decide when to announce the conference’s latest addition and where to go from there.

Western Kentucky president Dr. Gary Ransdell told the Daily News last week that he will chair a committee this week that will determine a five-year strategic plan for the conference’s future.

That plan will likely include whether future expansion is necessary, future conference championship sites and a restructured television partnership, amongst other things.

Fan comment: The Sun Belt board meeting is next week Tuesday. The UTA board meeting is next week Thursday. Putting two and two together... UTA to the Sun Belt by Friday.

Not sure how you could put together a 5-day strategic plan in this environment much less a 5-year strategic plan.

Sparks normally does know his stuff. He doesn't fly off the handle like some "tweeters". I consider it official when ArkStFan puts it on the World Wide Web.

"Our plan is.... to meet again next week and come up with a plan!"

Could the "5-year strategic plan" be an allusion to App State and GS joining in 2014 or beyond? UTA goes in as the 12th basketball this week. 5-year strategic plan would involve assigning divisions, CCG logistics, TV contract renegotiations etc. All of which cannot occur until they send out that 12th invite. Still believe there will be two more additions post UTA, so they can get to 12 teams and be done with it.

There is no reason to go to 12 in an environment where it is not known what FSU and/or Clemson to B12 could generate downstream.

Actually, it makes the most sense. We must be proactive and not appear to be a weakling in all of this. One thing we should know is that App. State is not being offered by CUSA as CUSA now has all the presence it needs in CUSA. So, the SBC adding them would be smart. Once App. State is added, the pressure would be on Ga. So. to act. I feel we can secure both, get to 12, and be in a position of strength if CUSA comes after FAU and MTU. Sitting by and being reactionary is not going to help us.

RE: SBC Spring Meeting 2012, Destin FL - TheRevSWT - 05-19-2012 07:36 PM

It really comes down to whom you think you can nab vs. whom you think will be nabbed from you.

If you think you could sway some CUSA/MAC/ACC/MWC teams to come to the Belt if those conferences lose someone key... it makes sense to sit tight. Make some "what if" phone calls, and see if you can grab some folks.

If you think there's no way to sway any of those teams from other conferences to come to the Belt, then it makes sense to move to 12, with the plan to do a conference championship game. That way, worst case scenario, you lose 2, and still have 10 for conference play.

One thing that occurs to me is that UTA is being added this week because there is some perceived value associated to them and at least 75% of conference Presidents agree with that assessment. The fact that GaSo and App State are not being added speaks volumes. Some might say that they have a soft invite which will be revealed after June so they can compete for the FCS Championship. They have 9 championships between them. Just how many do they need? I am not buying it. I think we are the point of having invited everybody available that could get >75% of votes. Unfortunately only 3 accepted, the rest having chosen CUSA.

Even if CUSA lost Tulsa, USM and ECU the remainder schools would not come to the Belt; however, some Belt schools would still break their necks to join a very depleted CUSA. That's why it's imperative that our presidents act this week. We have to solidify our base in case we do lose 2-3 schools.

RE: SBC Spring Meeting 2012, Destin FL - Eagleditka - 05-19-2012 07:51 PM

Why wouldn't you go to 12 now if you're anticipating another raid withing the next 12 months? Would you rather be raided and be left with 8 teams or 10 teams?

Sure...and the main reason would be fear that others would bolt and you would be left in an NMSU/Idaho situation. The only way to stop that is to do a Grant of Rights.

If we were to do a Grant of Rights then CUSA schools would know that we were stable. If USM and ECU left then we would have no fear of anyone bolting and CUSA would have to go back into the FCS ranks or the MAC to pull new teams. Without their own Grant of Rights then they would have some fear of others bolting to a more stable conference.

Invite App and Southern and do a Grant of Rights and raise the buyout.

RE: SBC Spring Meeting 2012, Destin FL - AlaIllTex - 05-19-2012 08:02 PM

If we can get App and Ga Southern now, we should do so. We'll need a tough retention policy. We've identified who we want and who will be happy to grow with us.

If theres movement above, we cant really help that. But we can make it expensive and profitable for us if we get raided.

And we concentrate on what we can control.

RE: SBC Spring Meeting 2012, Destin FL - TheRevSWT - 05-19-2012 08:16 PM

Help me understand the Grant of Rights, would you? I've seen it mentioned a few times on here, but am unclear on what that actually means/entails.

And depending on who leaves CUSA at this point, I am not so sure about Belt teams being all het up on leaving for CUSA. That may just be wishful thinking on my part, but it really does look like CUSA has lost quite a bit of "swagger" with the departure of their top teams.

RE: SBC Spring Meeting 2012, Destin FL - Tuscon - 05-19-2012 08:28 PM

I definitely think there's no point waiting if we know who we want to get to 12. Maybe they don't actually want to commit yet though? The presidents seem to want to get to 12, but don't like the current choices. Or they have a decision on the two they want to grab up.

I have a feeling we'd get to 12 right now if smoke was coming from the right places. All this waiting makes me think Appy, GS, NMSU, and Idaho are not actually in the mix...
