What To Do In Your College Town When Visiting... - panama - 05-09-2012 08:40 AM

In an effort to get us off the realignment pointless banter...figured, why not a thread about what we must see and do when visiting your town for an away game

RE: What To Do In Your College Town When Visiting... - Paul of Troy - 05-09-2012 08:56 AM

In Troy, let us see...

You could get some fried chicken or get your car title pawned.

The university is probably the best thing about the place. It is a nice place and fun to walk around and experience.

Downtown sucks. There are a handful of crap stores and one crap restaurant. I would recommend one restaurant in town. It is called The Half Shell. Good food and a pretty cool place.

Other than that I guess you could go see a movie at the Cinema 5.

Edit:

Oh yeah, there is this old Pioneer Museum that is semi interesting, but only once. I've been there five times and four of those times were really boring.

Tailgate and watch football of course.

RE: What To Do In Your College Town When Visiting... - SkullyMaroo - 05-09-2012 09:18 AM

In Mobile you can visit:
The bars on Dauphin Street
Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Dauphin Island beaches
The USS Alabama Battleship and Memorial Park
Fort Conde (French fort that protected from British and Spanish)
Fort Gaines (Civil War fort)
Bellingrath Gardens and Home
Several museums, including the Mardi Gras Museum
Gulf Coast Explorium Science Center and IMAX Theater
Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum
Dauphin Island Estuarium
Art galleries downtown
Historic homes and churches
Plenty of golfing

#1 thing would be to get a hotel room on the beach because its only 2 miles from FAU's campus and stadium. Football season is technically "off season" so you would probably be able to get some good rates.

Mizner Park is a nice place to grab a drink, eat, and simply walk around. If you want to go a little north Delray Beach's Altlantic avenue is another one loaded with bars and shops. There are literally 100's of restaurants in a 10 mile area to choose from. Eating out is almost a religion in Boca Raton.

Gumbo Limbo is a nice lil park right on the beach that has a nice nature walk, Sea Turtle research facility and as a kicker is free.

Let's see, where do I start.

You have the outlet malls that have every retailer under the sun.
You can drive 10 minutes to Texas Ski Ranch for some wake boarding on cables or get pulled in a boat.
You can drive around 25 min, grab a cooler full of beer, radio cooler, inner tube and float the clear waters of the Guadalupe.
You can go to the square in downtown San Marcos to club it up.
You can drive 30 minutes to Austin and booze up and down 6th street.
You can visit Aquarena Springs and ride in a glass bottom boat.
Tailgating is out of this world
Go 15 min down the road and visit Cabela's Outdoors
Get trashy at Don's Fish Camp
Go visit Wonder World see petting zoo, fault line, park, etc
Go to Gruene Hall and watch a Texas Country concert
Catch Ghostland Observatory at Whitewater amphitheater
Drive to San Antonio and go hang out on the River walk
Go to Selma and bet on the horse races
And much much more!

Grilled oysters at Wentzels and if the weather is nice have a beer on the patio of one of the downtown bars.

Over priced but delicious! Great southern food

RE: What To Do In Your College Town When Visiting... - Atlanta Trojan - 05-09-2012 11:21 AM

In Troy its all about the University. There a Large food court at the dining hall with probably 8 resturants including Moes, Buckhead deli, a pizza place etc.. We have top notch facilities now that the basketball arena is basically done, and its a very walking friendly campus.

In the City theres not much, The half shell is good, Sisters down the street is good southern food. and theres a Movie Theater. Other than that have fun shopping at Walmart...If you want night life you will need to make a 45min drive to either Montgomery or Dothan.

RE: What To Do In Your College Town When Visiting... - TrojanNation - 05-09-2012 11:30 AM

Also, since Mobile claims Gulf Shores/Orange beach, Troy can claim Panama City Beach. It is the same distance away.

Stay in PC friday night, tailgate pregame, watch your team lose in the Vet, lick your wounds and make your way back to PC to enjoy some late night drinks on a balcony over looking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico with a nice cool breeze. Get up Sunday morning and sit on your balcony w/ a coffee/bloody mary/memosa and watch the sun rise and maybe catch a few dolphins playing.

Can't beat a trip to TROY! (or PCB w/a detour to Troy for a football game).

Bodies exhibit
Picnic in Piedmont Park
Shopping in Buckhead at Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza
Explore and shop any of these neighborhoods; Atlantic Station, Little Five Points, Virginia Highland, Poncey Highland, Morningside, Glenwood Park, Decatur, etcetcetc
Check out GSU's campus and the rest of Downtown Atlanta
Go to the top of the Westin on Peachtree and eat at the revolving Sun Dial restaurant
Go to Stone Mountain park and climb the mountain
Play in the fountains at Centennial Olympic Park
And much much more

According to the internets, PCB is more than twice as far from Troy than Gulf Shores is from Mobile.

Love the aquarium.

Jonesboro:

Several clubs and bars around in the westtest dry county in the world
Craighead Forest Park is a great place to take the kids. Has several hiking trails, and places to picnic and playgrounds for the kids. Also has a frisbee golf course if you are really bored.
We have a very large mall for the women to get their shopping out of the way.
Brickhouse is the best of the local eatries in town. Its got a patio, and doubles as what is the closest thing to a Sports Bar that you'll see in town.
Tailgate with the SBC's best fanbase.

It's a good thing we (Liberty) are not in the SBC (yet). All we do in Lynchburg is go to Church and persecute no-believers.

We don't have America's only 365 day Ski/snowboard facility.
We don't have the Blue Ridge parkway or Natural Bridge nearby
Thomas Jefferson never lived in his vacation home Poplar Forest here in town
We don't have a huge recreational lake (Smith Mountain Lake) nearby
We have no historical sites like Appomattox or The National DDay memorial
There is nowhere to eat or shop

We do have tons of Flames Athletics though, but we only play hymns and wear suits.

Most bars in Midtown, Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods have equally good burgers. Publik, The Local and Six Feet Under come to mind just of the top of my head.

I didn't realize Atlanta was a college town...
