Does that mean Troy get's to claim Montgomery and Dothan? Heck, isn't Troy Dothan one of the biggest if not the biggest university facility in that city and less than a hour from Troy? And same with Troy Montgomery less than a hour and you have AUM, Alabama St, then Troy.

Dumb comparison....:homer:

Actually, the real problem is one of media coverage. Yes, there are 200,000 people in Anniston/Gadsden. But.... No television stations are there. At best, in whatever media market JAX claims its' in, you will be no better than the fourth most covered team in that market. And that wouldn't change even if you made the jump to FBS. Perhaps if the TV station on JAX State's campus moved away from Jesus programming and combined a local newscast with commercial programming, then at least there'd be one station that covered you guys that people watched. Again, not your fault, but I don't see you guys getting any media exposure outside of two newspapers. Unless UAB drops football, that isn't going to change.

Troy is tertiary in Montgomery (behind Alabama and Auburn). They could actually be primary in Dothan and SE Alabama as there isn't anyone else there. And unlike Gadsden/Anniston, Dothan has its' own media.

USA is the one and only institution playing D-1 sports on the Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida Gulf Coasts. The university is relevant and heavily covered throughout in the Mobile-Pensacola TV market. And since much of our student population comes from Mississippi, we can try to grow into the Biloxi-Gulfport market as well.

Fair points. The only thing I will say on the media thing is that after watching an 11Alive news cast a couple weeks ago, on a Sunday night, Sam Crenshaw actually had a piece on this very subject (because of the GSU offer), and he stated that there were 3 possibilities for other SunBelt newcomers; ASU, JSU, and Ga Southern.... While I was amazed that Jax State was even listed, I was also amazed that he and the guest (Russell Wright of Collegiate Consultants) both agreed that JSU fits nicely between the Birmingham and Atlanta sports markets. I was NOT amazed that Mr. Wright stated that JSU has to update certain facilities.... I am not naive enough, nor is anyone else at JSU, to think that just because we made some great improvements to our stadium that we should get an offer to an FBS conference. We know we had to have a clear vision, and we have been putting that vision into motion now for the last couple years.

I personally would like JSU to stay in the FCS for a while, and so would some of my JSU brothers. You all are are welcome to visit our board...

Not. Happening.

Southern and App are both much more realistic and neither of them are exactly locks.

RE: Another look at Jax State - Burn the Horse - 04-20-2012 11:04 AM

Jax State has about the same odds of getting in to the Sun Belt as West Alabama.

Wait, you mean someone in the media actually mentioned Georgia Southern as a viable candidate for the Sunbelt???? What would Saint and Panama do if that happened??????

Sounded like it was merely speculation on Crenshaw's part to me, anyway, the inclusion of Jax State should tell you the whole thing was meaningless.

About as meaningless as a Middle Tennessee Pi Kapp?

Funny....I just read the Troy Forum, and it seems as if the Troy fans do still have a chant for JSU. You guys kill me... and the comment about the Southerners getting blown away by your band?...C'mon...have you guys done away with the Elvis show yet?

Waaaaaaa.....you sound like a baby when you say to "stay off our board"...

You just hate Jax State because of the old rivarly, and you know that if we were in the Sun Belt the rivalry would be back. And YOU don't want that... You think that Troy is too good to have JSU as a rivalry, but keep in mind that even as you condom fans blast JSU for being slow to market the University through electronic media, Troy has basically become the University of Phoenix's ugly step child.

RE: Another look at Jax State - Burn the Horse - 04-21-2012 02:44 PM

No I'm not whining, just stating a simple fact in response to your comments that you don't want your program in our Conference. Makes no sense for someone who doesn't want any part of the Sun Belt to spend so much time on the Sun Belt's board.

As far as the rivalry, yes I do believe Troy is too good to have little brother in Jacksonville as a rival anymore. We made the moves necessary to advance our program and yall did not, thus, we are better. If we had stayed in the FCS then I would not feel that way, but we didn't...you guys did.

You come here and insult the Sun Belt on the Sun Belt board...that won't earn you a lot of friends on our turf.

Never insulted the SBC. Decent conference... I did say "you act like it's an honor", but I would more or less call it a "privilege"...not an honor. There is a Troy fan on our boards that told a few of us, as he's on our board all the time, that you all were here whining about Jax State becoming a possibility. Last I checked; this isn't your board. It's a community board. Say what you want about JSU, I truly don't care, but it's funny to see what you Troy fans say about JSU...funny! The poster had a good topic, and all you Troy fans are crappin your pants at the opportunity to dawg JSU. There were some good points made, but for the ones who simply get on here and type crap it just doesn't make sense. Doesn't the fact that no other JSU fan is posting here tell you that we really don't care about Troy anymore? Plenty of them are reading this, but we all think this topic is great. I simply joined in because of all the hatred being spewed about JSU on here... The only reason why JSU fans are talking about the Sun Belt is because of the media talking about it. There have been many discussions on which conference to join, if asked, but the Sun Belt came up only after media covered it a while back.

Based on?

The University of Phoenix's is pretty much a diploma mill. I have taken classes at three different universities and I can tell while Troy is not Yale it certainly is not a cake walk. And considering a good part of Troy's student population comes from international students you would be making fun of European and Asian education.

The thing that hurts us is that we don't have an engineering program yet and if we did the enrollment and academics would shoot up over night.

RE: Another look at Jax State - TrojanCampaign - 04-21-2012 07:25 PM

But this Jax State talk is silly. I don't want you guys in the conference not because I'm a Troy fan. I don't want you guys because it makes absolutely no sense to add you. Being reasonable here it would be very pointless to add you guys because you add no new market and sub par sports. Basically it would be more beneficial to you guys than it would be for the conference. And to top that Georgia Southern, App State, and teams in Texas seem more likely to succeed at FBS.

For the record I would not mind Georgia Southern they are one of the best FCS teams and have good baseball. You can downplay Troy all you want but even if it doesn't make sense to people outside Troy our football team get's it done no matter what conference or division we are in.
