Donald Trump for President? - Ninerfan1 - 02-11-2011 02:15 PM

Listened to his speech yesterday at CPAC. Gotta say it was pretty good.

Can't help but think it's just some shameless self promotion on his part. But if he does get into the race what does everyone think?

I don't know that he could win the nomination, though I think he'd make a good run of it.

I personally can't stand the prick.

Herman Cain will be on at 4:30

Well if there's a guy who knows how to go bankrupt, it's Donald Trump, so he'll be right at home with our deficit.

I don't know what his exact politics are, but if I were to guess from some various quotes over the years, he sounds conservative on the fiscal end, pretty liberal on social issues, and generally non-interventionist in foreign policy (i.e. he was outspoken against the Iraq War, etc.). Now if this is all true, he'd be close to my ideal candidate.

Trump, obviously, has a history of being perceived as arrogant, snarky and full of himself, such as Paul M's take on him. I thought this for a long time, and still think he is to some extent, but I've come to believe over the years that much of what he says is TIC and schtick. He has no problem mocking himself and this persona (and hair) in commercials and late night talk shows.

...And really, how many politicians aren't arrogant, snarky and a bit full of him/herself?

I don't think he'd get close to a nomination, though. He's too disliked by too many.

The Donald is an attention whore. Kind of funny when he says Ron Paul has no shot, coming from somebody with much, much less of a shot.

Herman Cain can't even win in Georgia, how is he going to win nationwide?

I don't. He bought one good speech. Most people recognize there is more in a president than NY/NJ property management.

Military, diplomacy, Constitution issues...you really think Trump has above average proficiency in all of these areas?

If Bloomberg is any indication of a NYC based leader, Trump would be disasterous. So would Bloomberg, for that matter.

Loaded question. That said, I agree with you that Trump has no chance to be elected. I suspect he knows that as well but will encourage this kind of talk because when you're The Donald, any attention is good.

I guess I'm just noticing but you could turn off the picture and think that Bush was speaking instead of Perry.

I think we could have a lot of fun making a list of (fairly) recent presidential candidates who did not have "above average proficiency" in the areas you name. I will NOT start. 05-duck

James K Polk was disaster in the foreign policy arena. He threatened war with Britain then backed away and split the ownership of the Oregon region (the Pacific Northwest) with Britain.

How did we recover? Luck I guess.

I'd vote for Ivanka before her dad. Of course she's not eligible to run for 5 more years or so. She converted to Judaism when she married her Jewish husband. And he's a Democrat so I wonder what her political leanings are?

I've never forgiven that bastard for killing the USFL.
