Not as bad as some were saying. Not as cheesy fun as the Brendan Fraser ones. Just OK I'd say.

I think they're trying to rebrand it back into the "horror" genre as to start the Dark Universe concept.

Probably a "C". If they want to continue their "universe" to compete with Monsterverse for example, then movie #2 needs to be better or it will die before it gets started.

One thing that did work is that Sofia Boutella, besides being HOT, is pretty decent as the creature.

http://www.darkhorizons.com/cruise-was-in-control-of-the-mummy/

Sounds pretty bad for The Mummy.

The concept was pretty good on paper.

1) Start your new "universe" with a classic creature
2) Get one of the world's biggest, most bankable stars to sign on as the lead.
3) Try and go back to the theme of action, suspense, horror instead of the action comedy genre the last films gravitated toward.

All sounds good on paper but the reality was something quite different.

Sometimes even the best laid plans fail.

Its making me nervous for Top Gun 2!

If it had of happened 25 years ago... YES.

Now, not so sure.... the only thing Tom Cruise has been really hitting on has been the Mission Impossibles. I have heard good things about Jack Reacher but... ehh.... I can't buy Cruise in that super bad ass role yet...

I thought the first Jack Reacher was pretty good, the last one was awful.

ha! this is treasure man. top gun is his bread and butter. what needs to happen for treasure to blow his load entirely is for them to create a tony scott hologram to helm a top gun prequel where liam neisson is tom cruise's estranged father, estranged because he was f*ckin' m.i.a.'ed in ******* vietnam

I'd have to revisit Maverick's convo with ___ at his place when he discussed his dad but I was pretty sure he said he died in action.

I want to say the original idea was that Maverick would be an instructor at Top Gun and he'd have to give life lessons to the "new guy" that is basically the reincarnation of him from the first movie.

First movie was ok. Had a couple of good performances (Duvall!); Cruise was fine. Worth your time if you can stream if for free; questionable if you have to pay. But to your point above, which implies you've read at least one of the books... Tom Cruise is NOT the Jack Reacher from the books. He's a fine action guy/problem solver/etc. But as you note the book character is a big, bad assed dude. A brawler of a fighter. I've read a couple of the books. They were ok but they definitely formed an impression of who Reacher is, and it was difficult to look at Cruise playing the role after reading one of the books. And agreeing with Badger, the second movie isn't worth your time, even if free.

Viper indicated he was there when Maverick's father was killed in action. He told him his father died while attempting to save three other pilots.

I guess if they were to do a sequel they could state he actually did not die but has been held in captivity all this time.

I read the first book in the Jack Reacher series after seeing the first movie and what a bad job at casting versus the description in the novels.

Tom Cruise needs a hit soon after the Mummy flopping

You're right but something tells me it isn't going to be Top Gun II. Can't help but think it will be God awful. Probably make a crap load of money, but be awful.

My guess would be he'll have to wait for 2018 and the next Mission Impossible movie.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 06-21-2017 12:20 AM

Saw Cars 3 tonight. Ehh... the setup about McQueen and not quite being ready to retire was a good idea.... and for the most part the movie worked...but.... the end/ending with McQueen having to see who taught Doc Hudson, and where he raced as a beginner, seemed a little long winded and then how the final race played out.... I don't consider myself a fan of that. The trainer Cruz Ramirez was funny to begin with but kind of wore thin with her gimmick by the end of the movie.

FWIW, I can't believe we have gotten 3 theatrical Cars movies (and I believe one theatrical spin off movie) and yet are still stuck with only ONE Incredibles movie.

Agree with the point that we've needed an Incredibles sequel much more than a 3rd Cars (or Toy Story, for that matter). But you guys do realize there is an Incredibles 2 in pre-production, right? June 2018 release.

No real toy market for The Incredibles

No market for super heroes? Surely you jest....

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 06-25-2017 12:35 AM

Watched S3 and 4 of Transformers G1 series on dvd.
--Not as bad as I remembered but paled in comparison to the S1 and 2.

Spiderman 2 / dvd
--Probably the best of the Tobey's.

Finished S2 of Supergirl / NF
--Not bad overall, and some of the storylines and what not were kind of cool. My real lone beef with the entire season was her adopted sister having the whole gay love interest thing. But not in the sense of having it, more like the sense of making long and drawn out and made a big deal of. Don't get it twisted.... I think Supergirl and her love interest of Mon-El was unnecessarily overly involved too. I did enjoy the whole Daxum story line and its intertwined connection to Krypton. I really find Lena Luthor and her relationship to her mother and brother Lex fascinating. And how that relates to her and Supergirl. I did somehow feel that I thought Superman got thrown in to help the show somehow versus feeling natural that he'd show up. I did kind of like the Alien bar thing.... I did like Guardian and his whole deal... I found Kara's deal with being a reporter and how her new job with her new boss worked out was also very interesting. Cadmus, Mon-El's parents, Megan/Mrs. Martian, and other story elements were also captivating. Overall, I thought S2 was much stronger than S1. I guess all I have to complete now is S2 of Legends of Tomorrow.

My only beef in S1 of that was how they did it... I liked the characters and the acting of their parts...but somehow it felt like the spin off for a spin off's sake.
