django unchained. yep. and that's a western. tarantino's a f*cking gem. for those who've seen it, there was a scene towards the end where leo smiled and his grimy teeth shone. christoph waltz was priorly a dentist. what was the significance?
I don't know but it was a Dentist vs Candie.

no sh!t. i believe that's awesome

The Living Daylights / dvd
--watched as it was the first theater movie my dad and I watched together, ironically it was for my birthday back in '87. I liked Dalton as a Bond. License to Kill was so much darker...but I kind of liked that one too....Dalton never got his due IMO.

The Girl Who Played with Fire / The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest / NETFLIX
--Parts 2 and 3 of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. IMO, the first movie, TGwtDT was a self contained story about some Swedish industrialists and the secret lives they led. However, some odd things about the female lead, Lisbeth Salander, were put into the story. Basically, parts 2 and 3 take you down the path of how she got to where she was at the first movie. The political intrigue and how deep the rabbit hole went were pretty solidly thought out IMO. I highly recommend watching watching the Dutch Trilogy OR the Extended Dutch versions ( each part of the trilogy is split into nearly 90m Director Cut/Extended Edition portions, 6 in all to take you through the trilogy). I hope they get around to making parts 2 and 3 for the English version they put out a few years ago.

47 Ronin/ BR
--A very cool "supernatural" kung fu movie. Basically, Ronin are master-less samurai and this tells the tale of how a witch and a power hungry war lord force a clan into being considered Ronin by the Shogun. However, the ronin, convinced of the treachery by another, seek revenge on the man who took their master from them. In the end, the shogun gives them their due respect. The Keanu Reaves tie in comes from him being an outsider to the clan, yet gets favor with their master. One of the guys against Keanu's character's being included with their clan has a change of heart.

The 47 Ronin is based on a true story, PTNC. It happened in the early part of the 18th Century, and is one of the most celebrated events in samurai history.

I know, but the actual movie had supernatural stuff intertwined.

It's Hollywood. What did you expect, a totally accurate depiction? Not even the original Japanese version gives you that. Although it's far closer than this version.

RE: The movie thread - gdunn - 05-05-2014 02:10 PM

I tried to watch The Wolf of Wall Street. Apparently I can't handle a piss poor plot, horrible acting, and the use of the "f" word a million times.

Watched "Last Vegas". No big plot, just 4 old guys have fun in Vegas. Good for a few laughs.

Watched Frozen for the first time a couple of days ago; that is a beautiful movie, and it has music to knock your socks off.

It was a good movie.

I bought something I haven't seen since my youth the other night.

All 3 original TMNT movies on Blu Ray. $12 at the Wal Mart.

pretty good, but it was so hard for me to get past the lack of research put in to monarchical governments. Elsa, as queen, leaves her kingdom and leaves anna in charge? and then she leaves and leaves a no name stranger in charge? You're telling me there was no royal advisor, parliament, Vizier, or anything? Talk about no chain of command

And then we have her parents who are like, ok we think the best thing you can do about your powers is lock yourself away and never use them. That will probably solve all our problems. Worst parents ever

I had gotten the dvd set a while back. 1 and 3 were pretty good.

As far as the first one goes, it's ultimately a kid's movie; a movie for adults would have a more linear line of ascension. Kids don't care about that sort of thing, so it works in that regard.

For the second one, I don't know how I'd react if my daughter suddenly manifested cryokinetic abilities...or ANY abnormal abilities for that matter; if it were something that could cause harm to others - as it did in the movie - it could go either way.

I was never crazy about 3.. But it's been years, maybe I'll enjoy it more now.

Netflix came the other day.

We have "Delivery Man" and "Saving Mr. Banks". We also have "Frozen" on Blu Ray that my wife got. So tonight could be a film fest.

I did watch a couple of movies the last week..

Oz The Great and Powerful: I felt like it was good for what it was. The beginning had too much of a Wizard of Oz feel to it. But it was cool to see how it all came about for the Wizard of Oz. (That was one movie I feel like I watched too many times as a kid).

Constantine- Keanu Reeves flick about a guy that sends demons back to hell. It's enough to keep me interested. I remember watching it in college one night and thinking it was a decent movie. I watched it again the other night and got trapped yet again.

As I Lay Dying- James Franco's take on a Faulkner classic. I could only stand 10 minutes of barely being able to understand through poorly acted out accents.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger*- (Can be streamed through Netflix) Documentary from Chris Bell about steroid use in sports. It's cool because it looks at athletes, power lifters, Wrestlers from the WWE/WWF, and even his brothers. It doesn't show approval for taking 'roids nor does it talk against it. It's like he's walking the middle and doing all this research and having both sides chime in. It's almost 2 hours long, but didn't feel like it. He looks at Schwarzenegger a ton during the film. Touches on Bonds, Big Mac, Jose Conseco, etc. As someone who hasn't done steroids but looked into, I found it very informative.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 05-10-2014 09:24 PM

Brick Mansions / theater
--decent crime action/drama. The martial arts displays and the stunt driving were top notch. Story was pretty decent but I am not sure how I feel about the end considering how the story unfolded from the beginning. Paul Walker did a good job in what would be his final movie sans FF7.

X Men 2 / BR
--One of my favorite X Men movies.

Star Wars III / BR
--While the darkest of the "new" trilogy, it suffered from having to end a certain way.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 / theater
--I liked it and it did a decent job of filling in some points teased about in the 1st one but I do kind of agree with some of the critics... too many character introductions to do justice to any one of them. I thought Jame Fox did a decent as Electro but then again, after reading Electro's background...there wasn't much to really work with.

6 Bullets / NetFlix
--a 2012 Jean Claude Van Damme thriller most closely like the first Taken. Basically, JCVD is a retired mercenary (and French Foreign Legion) that helps people recover their kids out of the sex trade in this city. However, his tactics aren't appreciated by the local cops and his last mission ended up with a few dead. His new employer is a MMA fighter making a comeback who has his daughter kidnapped by the runners of the trade.

RE: The movie thread - Lush - 05-14-2014 11:45 AM

miller's crossing. early 90's coen brothers. gangster film with an anti-hero, weird, i know (the dude from usual suspects, gabriel bryne). great film, though heavy reliance on over acting. and the most over acting was actually the best acting though john turturro is sort of a legend

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 05-17-2014 08:05 PM

Role Models / tv
--Actually, not that bad of a comedy. Although Sean William Scott still can't shake the Stiffler typecasting.

RE: The movie thread - UCGrad1992 - 05-17-2014 08:22 PM

Took my son and his buddy to see Godzilla (3D version) earlier today. Awesome action and special effects and better acting/story line than I expected. I will definitely get a copy on blu ray when it comes out. Here's a trailer...

RE: The movie thread - BlazerJoe - 05-20-2014 12:47 AM

I saw Godzilla over the weekend. I didn't really care too much for it. I think I was expecting more...I dunno...Godzilla in a movie called Godzilla.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 05-26-2014 11:56 PM

Speed Racer / BR
--say what you want, but I loved the live action movie.

Godzilla /theater
--Ehhh, not a bad movie...but the epic monster fight a the end was too marred by atmosphere....

Godzilla: King of the Monsters / NetFlix
--Ehh just didn't like it too much even though I thought the set up was ok.

Godzilla Raids Again / Net Flix
--I liked the set up but the movie kind of sucked IMO.

Godzilla vs Mothra / Netflix
--I liked this one. Although I had totally forgotten about the caterpillars.

Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla / Net Flix
--This was hilarious, esepcially with the Alien set up.

Godzilla vs Ghidora / NetFlix
--Pretty cool set up and having Rhodan, Godzilla, and Mothra work together to take down the Martian menace in Ghidora was pretty cool.

**********
overall old school Godzilla commentary:

I'm kind of impressed at the work on the miniatures they did in these. The fights which really did look like guys in rubber suits duking it out were crazy... and funny. Some of Godzilla's expressions were priceless. Not sure how I felt about the Island, the fairies, and Mothra.... IMO Godzilla and a epic monster movie is a little overhyped and now that I have watched some of the earlier movies, I really can't bag on the newer ones as much.

*****************

X Men: Days of Future Past
--Maybe I am the only one on this but I thought First Class was WAY BETTER. That said, the interlocking of the old and new X Men movies was cool and all the characters fit together nicely. I really liked seeing how broken down Xavier got after Cuba. "What it took" to get him back in the saddle was pretty cool. I really think they have done a good job in forming the bond of Xavier and Magneto and how they are different yet the same.

RE: The movie thread - DaSaintFan - 05-27-2014 05:47 AM

Just got done re-watching 1941 on Crackle.

I forgot how HILARIOUS this movie was, and how under-appreciated some of the actors and actress were in their roles. People either LOVE this movie, or they HATE it. And IMO, I think the people who hate it are still under a misinterpretation of what was being done in this film.

RE: The movie thread - gdunn - 05-28-2014 07:39 AM

I watched a couple of movies over the long weekend.

"Now You See Me"-- I thought it was pretty good, with a good story line. It was enough to keep me interested for 2 hours.

"Dodgeball"-- It's a classic to me. One of the first Vince Vaughn movies I watched that I could stand with him in it. Just the dialogue with Ben Stiller is enough to have me giggling like a school girl. All that said, Steve the Pirate is my favorite.

"Ride Along"-- It's a re-told tale, however, with Kevin Hart's over the top yelling and Ice Cube being Ice Cube, I actually enjoyed it and had a few laughs. I'd give it 3 beers out of 5.
