the master. need to watch this again. fell asleep during the penultimate scene where joaquin meets with psh in england. not the movie's fault, i was just tired. joaquin phoenix's character terrified me, he was horrifying. i also need to think more about the film before i give an opinion. i was really tired while watching this.

Your girlfriend is absolutely correct. As far as the last scene, the pucker factor is the only reason for it being there. It was actually quick and painless. This ain't from me; it's from one of the actual hostages.

tnx blazer. it's always a bummer to hear the real story, but that doesn't make the real story any less dramatic. and it also doesn't detract from a quality film

Been through all 4 PotC movies.

1-3/dvd
--One was the best. Two was pretty solid. By the time they got to 3 ths story was way to convoluted. I was also upset they underused Chow Yun-Fat considering his character had so much to offer.

4/ BR
--DAMN the BR PRINT IS AMAZING. Black Beard was such a bad ass. Its probably my most favorite aside from the first one.

Ninja Scroll/ dvd
--Just a totally bad ass anime with lots of sex, violence, and ninjas!

The problem with the second and third ones were that they tried to pigeonhole a sequel in where there wasn't supposed to be one - and I'm saying this as someone who loved the first two. I like the third one, but it is INCREDIBLY bloated. Plus, they did blow it with Chow Yun-Fat. I like the fourth one for what it is, but something felt off. I think the score was a bit bothersome for me. It falls in the same realm as GoldenEye: fun movie, but a jarring score.

Ninja Scroll is fun. I remember watching that as a sophomore at Alabama State back in '96. It really opened my eyes to anime, and it showed me that the genre had more to offer than Ranma 1/2 and Patlabor.

Agreed on the "forced sequel" stance on PotC 2 and 3. I think the "off you speak of on PotC 4 is no love story angle this time. Yeah Jack loves ____ and yea ____ loves her dad Black Beard and yeah they try to get the mermaid and the priest together but the movie isn't "about that."

As for Ninja Scroll, it was one of the first anime's I ever saw. Loved it for its over the top sex and violence. Too bad the sequel, Ninja Resurrection , while having its own merits, just wasn't as cool. I actually did get the tv series they made for it but I didn't get into it and sold it off.

I wish they could get back to making some more Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex stuff... those two seasons of that series along with the 3 movies in the overall series were great.

I didn't care about the "romance" subplot. I got annoyed with it in the original trilogy, and I would've been just fine had they avoided it altogether in this one. I think it was more along the lines of a score that just took me out of the movie. It ranks up there with GoldenEye for me: fun movie, but a jarring score.

RE: The movie thread - Lush - 03-13-2013 02:41 PM

atlas shrugged II. being such a fan of the novel and after watching the first part, i was prepared for the worst. i was pleasantly surprised. while they did a better job of casting, that doesn't say a whole lot after the shoddy job with the first part. dagny still desperately needs an upgrade. thought the choice of hank rearden was good. the acting improved, which going along with the casting of the characters, couldn't have been hard.

i wasn't upset with the story they made. they even added some 99 percenters in there. thought that could have been utilized more. eagerly awaiting the finally! this film really deserved better

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 03-16-2013 11:15 AM

Archer S3 / NF
--I am amazed that I didn't start watching this series from the beginning when it started but I must say, after watching 2 1/2 seasons on NF along with some of the new stuff I like it.

Kiss the Girls / Along Came a Spider / dvd
--The original Alex Cross movies. I found both to be pretty solid serial killer tracking movies. Morgan Freeman is solid as always. I have to admit though, that the print for Kiss the Girls is horrible even for a dvd release. Granted I'm playing the disc upconverted out of my BR player but...there is no excuse for some of the compression issues. ACaS though, is a really good print.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 04-07-2013 10:02 PM

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc/dvd
--I still like Temple of Doom the best

The Exorcist/ DC DVD
--loved the movie

The Exorcist: Dominion / dvd
--prequel to the first--not bad

The Exorcist III /dvd
--Interesting story

Fallen / dvd
--loved the movie and the twist.

GI Joe: Retaliation / theater
--Better than the first IMO. Totally surprised the scrapped almost the entire hero ccast from the previous movie though. Firefly was cool how they did him.

RE: The movie thread - Smaug - 04-08-2013 12:53 PM

You have to be the only person I've ever run across that liked Temple of Doom best.

This is the even numbered series.

Saw Lincoln yesterday. Pretty good. Will have to do some research, but if Lincoln put off Confederate overtures to end the war to get the 13th Amendment past, wow.

The first one was good but I enjoyed #2 better. The thing that ruined the Last Crusade for me was the end when the get to the cup. I didn't hate Crystal Skull as much as some...

Anywho, if you didn't like two then how are you saying it is a even numbered series?

I too, thought Lincoln was solid.

RE: The movie thread - Smaug - 04-09-2013 08:59 AM

You are correct. It's an odd numbered series. I misspoke.

To me, the first and third ones are the best. What bugged me about Crystal Skull (among other things) is how the hell can the senior Dr. Jones be dead when he drank from the Holy Grail in the Last Crusade?

I'd have to rewatch that scene--the temple curshed with him in it I believe. Then again, didn't he get something used on him to heal him from his injury?

RE: The movie thread - Smaug - 04-10-2013 02:25 PM

Junior poured water from the Grail onto the bullet wound, healing it, and then Senior drank from the cup.

He didn't die when the temple collapsed. He rode out with Junior, Sullah, and Brody.

Remember? "We named the dog, 'Indiana'."

I liked Temple of Doom, but I loved Last Crusade. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was fine, but it was a bit too late.

Plus, it had Shia LaBeouf.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 04-11-2013 10:21 PM

Death Wish 3 / dvd
--Meh.... I liked the first one. The plot and overall action of #2 was good. I did find the gang in that one kind of cheesy though. Now I watched #3. The whole movie felt cheapened out. Plot... acting... it just felt like lets cash in for one more. I swear I noticed the blonde kid from Bill and Ted as one of the gang members. Anywho, I felt the movie sucked. About the only cool part was Bronson's guns he got in the mail. The gang leader was kind of bad ass too...

RE: The movie thread - MTPiKapp - 04-13-2013 12:56 PM

Trance- theater

Great flick. Big Danny Boyle fan so this was a no brainer for me.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 04-16-2013 09:47 AM

Black Gunn/ dvd
--Jim Brown in basically a racially charged gangster caper in Los Angeles. His brother is in with a Pro Black movement which ticks off the local mob after they make a hit. Brown's character Gunn, owns a night club and doesn't really want his brother's militant ways messing his club up. Has _______ that was one of those two gay guys from the 70s Bond movies in it as a Mob guy.

Iron Man Extremis (S1 E1-6)/ NF stream
--Tells the tale of the Extremis virus. Not bad but what I found most interesting was the choice of animation--a combo of colored pencil/marker drawn graphics with a CGI twist. It is a very cool visual style.

Transformers Prime / NF Stream
--Watched episodes 1-11 into season 1. Good story, animation, and action. Only thing I didn't like is the very stripped down collection of characters. Interesting take on Megatron using Dark Energon to heal himself and then raise a zombie army of dead Transformers. Pretty high production values in the CGI animation as well.

Captain America / BR
--Just like the movie.

Machete / BR
--Just like the absurd bad assness of it.

Django Unchained / BR
**saw in theatres/ bought BR **
