Tried to get the wife to watch 1 and 2 so that we could see 3 in the theaters.

Nope.

Actually, at spots fallen villains were recognized. Also, some of the SPECTRE meetings discussed passed on members such as Dr. No. Also there were several mentions to Blofield and his actions. Yes, each movie could be viewed independently but they did touch on on certain points. And in some regards past exploits were mentioned amongst Bond's superiors when they had their meetings at MI6.

JW3 was probably the most badass of all 3 of the movie so far. Its going to be interesting how they expand upon their universe with their rules for the hitmen, the hotels, how those coins work, and how the overseer shown in the 3rd one fits in to some of the actions that have taken place.

Then you just say to yourself, why didn't my man leave that guy's dog alone LOL.

I agree.. Didn't you post something or maybe I saw it elsewhere that they're doing a show called "The Continental" and it'll dig deeper into that world?

But yes I'd like to understand the rules, the coins, all of it.. And yea.. If the Russian would've let him be, there'd be no issue.. Maybe.. I mean the guy that approached him in JW2 might've still called in the marker to get his seat.

I don’t disagree with any of that but I don’t think it supports your original statement that the Bond franchise represents “one of the most intricate interconnected” film series.

I think an “intricate interconnection” implies movies that are linked to each other by storyline and characters in ways that are critical to an overall narrative. This is great if you’re watching the entire series, not so great if you can’t/don’t. Absolutely applies to Avengers, Potter, Star Wars, X-Men. Bond, as enjoyable as many of the films are, just doesn’t meet that standard. (Which is not a criticism - I like that I can skip one or even a few and not miss out.)

Watched "The Amazing Jonathan Documentary" on Hulu..

Started out great.. Got intrigued but by the end I was frustrated with the film maker cause he's a whiny b*tch.

RE: The movie thread - gdunn - 08-22-2019 08:24 AM

As of right now.. 14 hours until JW3 drops.

RE: The movie thread - Brookes Owl - 08-22-2019 01:49 PM

Just finished Screwball, the documentary about the Biogenesis/Tony Bosch/A-Rod scandal. His use of child actors is a little distracting at first because it's so comical but you get over that quickly, and then it strikes you how there's some layered meaning to having them appear. It works. There are a lot of sketchy characters behaving very badly throughout but as you might expect, Bosch - the charlatan running the show - comes off horribly (and he appears more than anyone else; in person and as impersonated by a kid). A-Rod and his handlers also get pretty rough treatment. But what I guess I just hadn't paid much attention to when all this was happening was how badly MLB managed this. The movie portrays MLB as handling the parties and evidence like corrupt keystone cops. Clips of Rob Manfred's interviews on 60 Minutes, as well as the kid re-creations, put him in a pretty bad light.

Recommended!

John Wick 3- I'll say this, there was alot of fighting and action... And I liked the look at JW's past.. I wish there was more of that.. But I like how it's set up for 4...

Coming to America / DVD
--An all time great comedy, hopefully this new sequel won't suck.

Trading Places / DVD
--Another all time great comedy.

PotC Curse of the Black Pearl, On Stranger Tides / BR
--Getting ready for another season of Pirate football LOL.

The Firm / tv
--happened to be on Showtime, watched it.

The Peacemaker/dvd
--One of my first ever dvds into my collection. Clooney and Kidman did have some chemistry in this one.

Batman The Series (60s) / BR
--Gotten back into trying to finish this box set LOL.

Batman The Animated Series / BR
--Gotten back into working on this series again.

The Fate of the Furious (aka F&F8 ) / BR
--starts off plausible then gets out of hand. They have extended the reach of this franchise way too much.

Shazam/BR
--Got it as a birthday gift, I really like what they did with the movie. DC did Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman right, why can't they get Batman, Superman, and Justice League right?

Goldfinger/dvd
--A great Bond movie.

American Pie 2 / dvd
--just because

Showgirls / dvd
--just because

Star Wars: The Last Jedi / NF (although I own the BR)
--All this Star Wars talk got me wanting to re-watch the most recent entry.

First Knights/NF
--Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen, yes please. That said, the movie had possibilities but kind of struggled to keep my interest. Kind of a cool mid evil tale of a multicultural kingdom of knights and corrupt leaders and how a noble one takes it on the chin for his master and then has to deal with the shame of letting his master die (even if it was his wish) and then letting that stigma sit with him and his family while the corrupt politician tries to a)make his moves and b) sabotage any revenge taken. It was ok...

New gnr material for dark fate....

I really hope this makes the new gnr album rumor true

The dogs' scenes in JW3 are insane. JW1 is still my fav but JW3 probably had the best action sequences.

I agree with you FF8. I thought the story was plausible but some of the action sequences were stupid. A submarine.......seriously!!!! I don't think they've extended the franchise too long but it did need this much needed break. And in Justin Lin I trust to get FF9 back on track!

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 09-16-2019 10:32 PM

Star Wars: The Force Awakens / BR + The Last Jedi / BR
--Revisited the BR versions after that new trailer broke. This whole Rey thing....

Scream / dvd
--just wanted to revisit it. I think the original and the 4th ones are the best. 3 was just going for too many plot twists. 2 was decent but...

Indiana Jones And the Last Crusade / NF
--have BR, just didn't go that route. Probably my least favorite overall of the IJ movies. I think the end is what kind of kills it for me as I think going for the Holy Grail is a IJ kind of tale.

Star Trek Beyond/ BR
--Someone I knew died within the last week and I found out they were a Star Trek fan. I decided to go with the last movie. I liked it a lot. I actually like all 3 of the new movies with new casting. I hope they can get the money right to keep them doing the movies. As far as the overall Trek stuff goes, color me a fan of the original tv show, and for the most part I liked the original movies. I've struggled to like everything else (well, the animated series wasn't too bad).

Friday the 13th I, II, IV, V, and VII / BR
--I mean last Friday was the 13th so.... But yeah, I think I, II, IV, and VII are the tops of the series. III was trash. V had its moments but the middle of the Tommy Jarvis trilogy was kind of weak overall with some of the characters. VI was mildly entertaining but kind of lacked some of good parts of the others. VIII/Manhattan was GARBAGE and borderline unwatchable.... just like Jason X. Jason Goes to Hell was interesting... not bad...not great.... just interesting. IMO, I and II are classics of the genre. VII with the telekinetic girl and the therapist was just a cool concept for a movie in this genre. IV, the start to the Tommy Jarvis trilogy was pretty cool start for what they did with it. It kills me that Corey Feldman wa so young in it LOL.

Black Panther/BR
--A good start to a hopeful franchise of movies for the characters. The only thing that still irks me about the movie though, is some of the cgi backgrounds just looked really fake.

RE: The movie thread - gdunn - 09-17-2019 08:12 AM

As of last night my digital copy of Spiderman: Far From Home was released... Probably won't get to it until this weekend. I really hope Sony and Marvel/Disney work something out...

Looking back on the Spiderman movies in the past, the 3 with TM were not bad, I enjoyed them... The two with Andrew Garfield weren't all that bad, I liked the first one... Spiderman: Homecoming bothered me a little with him whining and being a 15 year old kid, but then I realized he is a 15 year old kid in the movie, and when I re-watched it in that light, I really enjoyed it... I really enjoyed FFH in the theaters.. I hope they work it out, I could see this being a good franchise if Sony doesn't screw it up.

Oddly, after watching the movie, this kind of echoes some of my own feelings about the movie. 4 was much better.

RE: The movie thread - gdunn - 10-07-2019 11:36 AM

This time of year I have too much going on.. Football.. Hunting.. However over the last few weekends I watched the new part of "The Ranch" on Netflix.. They lost something when they fired Danny Masterson, regardless if the allegations were true or not... To keep it going after that has been tough, he and the cast had charisma together and Dax Shepard just isn't hitting it.. Don't get me wrong, I've seen Dax in several things and liked him, but this isn't it.

Glad they're ending it, just hope they end it right.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 10-07-2019 06:03 PM

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom / BR
--Just wanted to watch it. I liked it a lot better than their first one.

Gotham S5 / NF
--FINALLY it hits NF. Man, this thing is interesting. I got about 6 episodes to go till I'm done.

Paycheck/DVD
--I liked it.

Batman / BR
--Gearing up on Joker movies before Joker.

The Dark Knight/BR
--same as above

Joker/ Theater
--This movie is on a completely different level of psychology of the Joker than any other incarnation I can think of. Part Jack Nicholson, part Heath Ledger, and honestly, part that guy doing Joker on Gotham. I really liked it and I really was into how dark and down the line it went into the formation of Joker's attitude towards the world.

Rambo Last Blood / Theater
--This movie was a mixed bag IMO. Story was ok but it left out a lot of connecting points. Some real odd lack of exposition for some of the relationships. And then why would Rambo build a series of tunnels underground in his yard. The PTSD angle, the human trafficking angle, and to some degree the border crossing angle were good building blocks for a movie but somehow this movie just didn't connect like the last one did for me. For the series, I put 3 and 5 at the bottom. 1 and 2 are still tops to me. 4 was a pretty legit movie. All of that said, if you want that R Rated Rambo action then this movie will satisfy you.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 10-09-2019 08:58 PM

I am pissed off now.... Apparently my BluRay players I already own, when Netflix updates their app in December, will be obsolete to run NetFlix. Not going to buy new ones just for Netflix. Not going to replace tvs with built in NF just for NF use. Customer Service guy goes you could use a Amazon firestick..... really?
