Men's Basketball - Who wins out? - thetastygreek - 02-19-2010 05:35 PM

There are currently 5 teams tied atop the SBC standings at 10-5. All of them have 3 conference games remaining.

Arkansas State - WKU, UNO, Troy
Florida Atlantic - @Troy, WKU, MTSU
Middle Tennessee - USA, @FIU, @FAU
North Texas - UALR, ULL, @ULM
Troy - FAU, @UALR, @ASU

Of the five teams currently tied at the top of the standings, rank them in order of how likely you think it is that they'll finish the year 13-5.

As usual... Exclude your own team. Here's my guess:

1) Middle - The Florida road trip is brutal, and not many teams managed to sweep it this year. But USA is struggling with the injuries and playing at the Murphy Center. There's one major challenge and two (relative to everyone else's schedules) minor ones, so I think Middle has the best shot.

2) Arkansas State - WKU and Troy are two very tough games. The one against the rejuvenated Toppers is particularly daunting. But all three are home games, and ASU has been great at home this year.

3) Troy - I have them as almost a toss-up with ASU for 2nd on the list. Basically, I think it's slightly more likely that ASU wins at home against WKU than it is that Troy wins on the road at ASU.

4) FAU - Probably the toughest schedule remaining of anyone. ASU gets a game against UNO, Troy gets one against UALR, Middle gets one against FIU. But FAU has three games with no "easy" opponents left. I have a lot of respect for the Owls, but I just don't know that they can get through those three games unscathed. I don't know if anyone in the conference could at this point.

Because of our schedule, I think we (North Texas) has a better chance of winning out than not. Not to disrespect any of our remaining opponents, but UALR and ULL have not been good on the road this year, and ULM has dropped a few questionable games at home.

Everyone else... I have no idea how things are going to play out once the other 4 teams at the top (plus Western Kentucky) get done beating up on each other. I think MTSU might go 3-0, but I wouldn't put money on anyone else doing it.

Thoughts? Particularly in the East... How does everyone see the season ending?

North Texas and WKU

RE: Men's Basketball - Who wins out? - NT03 - 02-20-2010 08:47 AM

My crystal ball :

ASU goes 2 - 1 (W vs NO,Troy)
FAU goes 0 - 3
MTSU goes 3 - 0
UNT goes 3 - 0
Troy goes 2 - 1
wKu goes 3 - 0

That would put :
MTSU winning the East @ 19-12 ( 13-5) and clinching the NIT bid w/ the tiebreaker over UNT

UNT would win the West @ 21-8 ( 13-5) clinches 1st rd bye

Would leave Troy , ASU & wKu @ ( 12 -6). With wKu owning both tiebreakers & giving the Hilltoppers the 3rd seed & 1st rd bye

Troy @ ASU will be the last game played in the conference and will probably decided everyone's outcome as far as who gets the 3 byes. Should be a fun , wild and unpredictable finish

That lucky SOB Slaughter hit 2 threes in the last 30 seconds of OT. stAte held him scoreless in the first half.

He finished 2/8 from 3. SOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reed had 30,but missed a FT with 6.5 remaining in regulation. He finished 9/11 from the line. Not bad for a freshman. stAte is the 3rd least experienced team in the nation per kenpom. You better hope like hell Brady gets hired away.

Louisiana 73, ULM 71

Cajuns finished 9-0 at home in the SBC.

I noticed the "Slaughter Sucks" chant went away down the stretch of the 2nd half and OT.

21 Points in the 2nd half and OT. (13 in OT!)

I remember that UALR had a white PG that hardly ever scored points, but that sucker would nail you for a long trey at the end of a close game or in OT. Name was Graber. I hated that guy.

I thought I read on your forum that Pomeroy screwed up and identified a Junior as a Freshman, and that you guys aren't actually as young as that stat indicates.

Still a young team, but not the 3rd youngest in the NCAA.

We start 3 Freshmen, a Sophomore, and Junior . . . and the first guy off the bench is a Sophomore.

We're VERY young, by any measure.

Very impressed with Reed. Great freshman. He should be Freshman of the Year based on what I saw tonight. We were lucky to get out of there with a win.
