Since HF4L felt the urge to post the Ole Miss score for me, which I'm glad he did because even though I was at that game last night, I had already forgotten the score, I will oblige in offering how the MAC fared this weekend in OOC.

The MAC played 6 OOC games yesterday......and they won 2.

Miami(O) and NIU did their part yesterday in the chest-thumping conference, beating Cincinnati and Iowa St, respectively. However, let's look at the rest....
Ball St was bombed by Boston College 53-29. Ouch!
Maryland had their way with EMich 37-13.
Troy St upended the Herd, yes Marshall, the everso powerful dominant force in the best conference in the world  33-24.
And Toledo was smacked in the face by Syracuse 34-7.

Ah hell, give 'em a BCS bid anyway!!!

Now I know why the board has been so quiet here today. Where is everybody that was here screaming from the mountaintops last week?

And before you elect to disect the SEC's performance yesterday, please allow me......
Auburn beat a weakling AA school, WKy 48-3. Pfft, who cares?
Georgia Tech held off Vandy 24-17, as expected by the masses.
And Ole Miss was beaten by Texas Tech 49-45, as predicted by probably 99% of the Ole Miss fan base. Nothing to write home about for our conference I know, but this is about the MAC, right?

Contrary to what some of our literacy-challenged MAC friends here have said about me talking up Ole Miss, I have openly admitted that we suck, and I knew TxTech would beat us(please go to the SEC Conference Talk board in the week 5 pick'ems thread for evidence). We have some serious problems, but the difference between me and some of the MAC posters is that at least I have admitted that my team sucks!!!! 03-wink Some of you guys are still in denial.

I thought about not even posting this tripe, because it is something a couple of y'all would do, but in the spirit of good-natured ribbing amongst conferences, I decided to carry it out! It's all in good fun, fellas.

Go back to sleep, LL, it's not basketball season yet. We'll wake you up when Dook matters.

Man, this place was buzzing with MAC fans last week. Why, whatever in the world may have caused such an exodus?

It was a disappointing week for the MAC.

But, I'm glad we all agree that Ol Miss sucks.

And it seems we agree that they should be kicked out of that BCS conference and replaced with a team that's earned it.

Ol Miss should go to Div II, where they can play schools of their own size...and maybe win a few games.

Have a nice day. :)

Again, how many NC's does your little school have? Uh huh, sit down.

Wrong Flamer, it was a typical week for the MAC. Last week was just a fluke.

Good, we do agree on something. Now, let's start to work on your admittance that your entire conference sucks. Admitting the problem is the first step.

Ol Miss should go to Div II, where they can play schools of their own size...and maybe win a few games.

Like the MAC?

It was letdown week for the MAC teams that won. This is typical for all teams when you pour all your emotion into the game last week, that you struggle the next week after.

With a typical BCS slate, this is even tougher...because even after you pour your emotion into one game...you generally have another tough opponent waiting for you the next week.

Marshall definitely hurt themselves this week. Toledo did as well, but not nearly as bad. If anything, Bowling Green's stock went up on those two losses. Northern Illinois has proven they're a pretty darn good ballclub...but nothing Top 10 yet in my eyes. I got 'em still round #19, #20.

Good luck to all next Sat.... we played the worst game all year and still managed to stave a comeback win. It's good to have a bye week this week.

Bowling Green won the NCAA hockey championship in 1984.

That's one more NCAA championship than any SEC program can claim in football.

And, yes, it was a tough week for the MAC, but it hardly invalidates what the league has accomplished this year. It doesn't negate points I've made, which are that:

1. Bowling Green would be playing in a bowl game if it played a Big Ten schedule this year.
2. Mississippi would not win either MAC division this year.

It is also worth pointing out that Northern Illinois appeared to have an easier time beating Alabama than did Arkansas... one of the teams y'all supposed would roll through the MAC.

I believe Florida was another program mentioned as one that would roll through the MAC. Need I elaborate on Florida?

Don't take Dr. Torch too seriously -- he's just fishing for responses.

But I would argue Northern Illinois and Bowling Green remain underrated, at least in relationship to particular teams.

The prime example is No. 16 Kansas State (4-1). There is no way the Wildcats' schedule comes close to what Northern Illinois (4-0) has survived and there is no way Kansas State's lone loss at home to Marshall should be treated with more respect than Bowling Green's lone loss at Ohio State.

Kansas State is benefiting from BCS privlege. People are suspending disbelief about Kansas State in a way they never would with a MAC program.

Another example is No. 22 Purdue (3-1). Their lone loss was at home to Bowling Green, whose lone loss was at No. 4 Ohio State. Yet Bowling Green is mired off the charts at No. 28.

No way this makes any sense.

Anyway.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting Florida or Arkansas wouldn't be serious MAC favorites if they played in our league. But to suggest they would just blow through the league strikes me as a bit extreme.

It's obvious to me that any of the MAC's five best programs could trip up either of these schools. One trip is all it would take for Florida or Arkansas to finish second in either division.

And, in the MAC, second place has never been good enough for a bowl game.

I think you need to research the football National Championship record there sport. Ole Miss has 3, '59, '60, '62. UGA's most recent one was in '80. Florida had one in '96. 'Bama has TONS. ....and the list goes on and on.

......and who gives a rat's ****** about Hockey during Football season.

What is it then? You want to argue semantics? The BCS Champ IS the national champ of NCAA football.

- Rebel - 09-29-2003 06:15 PM

Just like a MAC fan to bring up Hockey in a football discussion. Pathetic? Why yes it is.

- Rebel - 09-29-2003 06:26 PM

Hey Schad, if your contention is that the NC Champion in football isn't an NCAA championship, then who has ever won an NCAA championship in football?

No one has ever won an NCAA championship in Division I-A football.

No, it isn't. The NCAA organizes championships in divisions I-AA, II and III. It does not sanction a Division I-A championship.

And you will cling to that until the day hell freezes over (read: when BG wins one).

- Terpy - 09-29-2003 10:18 PM

The BCS was formed in 1998 in order to determine a national champion. It may not be officially recognized by the NCAA but it is recognized by nearly everyone else.

1998 - Tennesee
1999 - Florida State
2000 - Oklahoma
2001 - Miami
2002 - Ohio State

Since the BCS only 4 groups who name national champions have picked someone other than the team who won the BCS game. Sagarin picked Ohio State in 1998 and Dunkel, Sagarin and Matthews picked USC last season.

Both of these picks seem absurd to me being that the those teams had loses and the Championship team did not.

There has also been other times in college football history where all the groups who name National Champions were unanimous in their choices.

Schadenfreude Wrote:No one has ever won an NCAA championship in Division I-A football.
Then what is your point? That NC's not recognized by the NCAA aren't national champs? That Georgia Southern can beat Oklahoma since they play in an NCAA championship and OK doesn't? Seriously, your argument is slipping.
