Since there are Florida schools in the SBC I thought I'd post this Florida Gulf Coast U. question here.

I see FGCU is on a road trip in the Midwest and is having success knocking off some of the lesser Div 1 teams (EIU, IPFW). Is this program headed toward Div 1 status? If so, would they be joining the SBC?

What is their football status? I doubt it.

They don't play football. I suppose it would be the Atlantic Sun for them if they are moving up.

Florida Gulf Coast has only been around since the late 90's. Located in Fort Myers, they already have between 10 and 15,000 students, and are rapidly expanding. Many nature preserves and golf courses around the campus, giving it the nickname of Florida Golf Course University. Their mascot is the Eagles. Their basketball, baseball, and softball programs have been pretty strong since its creation. They had to pull some strings to get into IIA and it might be some time until they get into IA. No football, but supporters of the university hope for it.

Thanks for the info. I've actually been on the FGCU campus, about 3 years ago while vacationing in Naples. One question -- IIA (?) Is that NCAA Div 2?

FGCU is in NCAA Div. II. There was a dispute between going to NAIA and Div. II. Div.II gave the better deal in reducing its probation for new schools from 4 to 2 years. NAIA was, in short, being difficult with them. Next year their probation will be up. Currently they are unaffiliated with any conference but are looking for a home. They do have a nice arena though.
