FIU's home opener tomorrow versus Jacksonville has been cancelled. So far no make up date has been announced and as of now it is not known whether the game will even be made up. This is disappointing for us FIU fans as many of us have been looking forward to this game for a long time, however there are more important things to take care of before football. Hope everyone in Florida prepares and is safe throughout the storm. The brunt of the storm shouldn't hit Florida until Friday or Saturday but we may begin seeing effects as early as tomorrow. Good luck to the rest of the belt this week, FIU will have to wait till it's game @ Youngstown State on 9/11 for its first game of 2004. It is not yet known the track that Frances will take, but this is the latest forecast, keep in mind that Miami and Palm Beach are both further South than the forecast is predicting but the Hurricane can shift directions and affect both FIU and FAU:

Game cancelled due to possible threats from Hurricane Francis.

Sept. 2, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville vs. Florida International football game scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2, at 8:00 p.m. has been cancelled due to the pending threats of Hurricane Francis in south Florida. FIU administration did not cancel the game until 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, after the Dolphins arrived in Miami. The game was scheduled to be broadcast live statewide on the Sunshine Network.

FIU athletic director Rick Mello has expressed interest in talking with JU head coach Steve Gilbert about rescheduling the game, but the Dolphins play 10 consecutive games with the possibility of an 11th if they qualify for the Pioneer Football League Championship Game on Nov. 20.

JU will now open the season next Saturday, Sept. 11, at Wingate at 1:30 p.m.

"I think we would be fooling ourselves to say we're not disappointed to drive six hours and not play," said Jamie Zeitz, assistant athletic director for media relations.

This is not the first JU football game to be altered by inclement weather. The Dolphins had a game vs. Chowan (N.C.) College cancelled in 1999 because of the damage Hurricane Floyd rendered on North Carolina.
