Turbeville column: Painful finish for ASU

Would have, could have, should have.
Those words hung in the air late Saturday night for Arkansas State players, coaches and fans when what should have been one of the biggest celebrations in Indian football history turned into one of the biggest disappointments.

An unbelievable victory was only 4:01 away for the Indians when redshirt freshman Levi Dejohnette pulled down an 18-yard touchdown reception. The goalposts were in danger of assault as ASU, more than a three-touchdown underdog, took a 35-26 lead over 25th-ranked Memphis in front of 30,427, the largest crowd in Indian Stadium history.

All that was a painful memory for the home team when the clock ran out and the Tigers escaped with a 47-35 triumph, leaving the Indians with a feeling that was as empty as the stadium was 15 minutes later.

ASU head coach Steve Roberts said his team wouldn’t dwell on what might have been, because it does no good. He admitted it won’t be easy.
