The way Louisiana-Monroe assistant coach Steve Farmer teaches it, your five offensive linemen have to function together as one.
"It's a core group," Farmer said. "It's a hand in a closed fist."
Thus, you won't see the big guys coming in and out of the game when ULM's offense is on the field. In ULM's game against Arkansas State last week, the Indians rushed for 260 yards as four linemen played 81 snaps together.
"I played O-line," Farmer said. "Once you set your line and once you feel comfortable with them, I don't like a lot of changing."
The extensive duty is partly a function of depth and partly a function of philosophy. As a former college offensive lineman at Illinois State, Farmer believes it's important to maintain chemistry during a game. ULM uses a rotation of roughly eight linemen.
