ESPN Sources: Phoenix Suns associate HC Kevin Young is finalizing a long-term deal to become the next coach at Brigham Young University. An aggressive push to hire NBA’s highest paid assistant lands BYU its top target.

Rumor is salary is $30 mill over 7 years.

Good luck. If I were a BYU Booster I would be concerned. Only 2 years college coaching as an assistant back in 2007 - 9. The duties in college coaching as a HC involves recruiting, NIL, boosters. But hey he is a Member of The Church of Jesus Christ (pause) Of Latter Day Saints.

You don't think he is a good hire?
https://www.cbssports.com/college-basket...-kentucky/

Most considered him out of reach due to the NBA money he already makes. But boosters Danny Ainge and Ryan Smith were his big advocates, and his deal is said to be 7 years 30 million. He has run mainly in NBA circles as the highest paid NBA assistant with the Suns, was recently a finalist for the Brooklyn Nets job, and was the top choice of Ainge and Smith. He was also a head coach in the G-League with 3 different teams.

JJ Redick also had great things to say about him. https://twitter.com/Grrr22/status/1780291227721834517
We'll see what his staff looks like and if his coaching translates from the NBA/G-League to college.

but their Billionaire Booster instead said, hire this guy and I'll pay for it, and I'll donate heavily on facilities in the future... money talks

and in that light, it looks like a good fit, a good decision, and nothing to lose for the program.

I'm sure the highest-paid NBA assistant is smart enough to figure out NIL. And he'll have help within the University as well as the staff he builds (which is rumored to contain at least two people most considered to be strong candidates). He may not pan out. But his pedigree will entice some and I'm sure he's smart enough to figure out NIL well enough that others in the University assigned to focus on that stuff will make up the difference.

Exactly, I think he already figured out the NIL thingy...

"this is the kid that we need... how much does he want.... tell Danny to get Smith on the phone"

I think it's an inspired hire. Obviously, the question is how will he translate in a college basketball environment, but it's a big swing with a guy that is insanely well respected as a coach at the highest level of basketball.

Good pick up for BYU. Don't mean this in a negative way at all, but really surprised they were able to land him. I read he received a lot of interest for head coaching roles from other NBA teams.
