RE: Total Revenues FBS 2022-2023 EADA
So, ND was, what, #3 in the nation in athletic revenues....before the new NBC deal even kicks in and adds $30-40 million a year to that total ?

That also doesn't include re-upping with Under Armour a few months ago for the most lucrative apparel deal in college sports history.

Do I have that right?

Where are the people who think that "money gap" issues will force ND's hand?

RE: Total Revenues FBS 2022-2023 EADA
The number that jumps out to me is honestly Stanford’s figure. Their athletic revenue is higher than both Florida and FSU along with being in the top half of both the Big Ten and SEC without having had the benefit of Big Ten/SEC conference revenue inflating that number. Yet, it’s a constant theme here that Stanford is supposedly going to downgrade in sports at some point.

Maybe now some folks will also begin to understand why I've been bullish on Kansas.

Agree with Frank on Stanford too.

On a G level, 5 of the top 7 are now Ps. UConn who was #6 didn't make it but #7 Cincinnati did. SDSU was the other.

6 of the top 7 in CUSA moved to the AAC, only FIU missing.

SDSU has drastically increased their spending, and prior to the Pac 12 implosion, were on the verge of getting their golden ticket.

Also, first in the MAC would be last in the AAC or MWC. Except for 3 newbies, the rest of the Sun Belt would be last in the AAC or MWC. Only Liberty of the future CUSA schools outspent Tulane, who was last in the AAC.

2 of the top 4 in CUSA went to the SBC a year earlier.

RE: Total Revenues FBS 2022-2023 EADA
That was another year with explosive revenue growth in college athletics. The future P4 programs averaged 11% increase in EADA reported revenues in FY2022-23 (versus the prior year; from $134.6M to $148.9M).

It’s the nB12 that had the programs with the biggest increases in revenue. Overall, reported revenues for nB12 programs increased by 19%. The programs with the biggest increases,

School…prior yr $…FY22-23 $…%
Kansas…..$125M….$206M….65%+
Colorado..$96………$136…….42%+
Cincy………$61………$77….….28%+
Baylor…….$111……$138…….24%+
ASU………..$107…..$128…….20%+

nACC…….$126.3…$139.5
nB12…….$100.3…$119.0
nB1G……$149.0….$161.7
nSEC…….$161.9…$175.1
nP4………$134.6….$148.9

Some of these revenues each year are skewed by donations for capital projects like new or revamped stadiums and facilities.

Of course they are. What's relevant about that is it shows the depth of the pockets behind the schools and what they are capable of doing to compete in facilities and in various sports.

We were right below that level as well, without having any real source of media money coming in (or CFP money or other bowl money...or a good football team or competent basketball).

Even though Boise State is down, they have broken the record for a single game attendance the last two years. Imagine where they will be today if they have the media money in the Big 12?

Three observations...

What is impressive? SDSU and UConn are spending at levels of the low-end power conference programs...but they're doing this without power conference media deals. Maybe SDSU's revenues are a one-time aberration resulting from the opening of Snapdragon Stadium. Regardless, these schools are both in very affluent markets and should be good expansion candidates because they have upside potential.

What is not surprising? Oregon State and WSU have an advantage from being part of the PAC. Strong opponents allow these programs to better tap their donors. The question is whether they can maintain their revenue after this year. They have an advantage if expansion is needed in the near future, but there is a clear financial ceiling to these programs.

What is the floor (outer-limit) of P4 revenues? The B1G and SEC have completely separated themselves financially from the non-P4 programs...they will not consider any expansion candidates from outside the ACC or B12. All the P4 programs that have low revenues will be in the B12 (WVU, K State, BYU, ISU, Houston, UCF and Cincy) or ACC (WF and SMU). Yet the ACC and B12 need to stay close to the B1G and SEC in terms of revenues. Cincinnati (@ $77M) had the lowest revenues of the programs that will be in the P4. The Mendoza line is around USF, Temple and Memphis in terms of required revenue to be considered. At most there only 4 to 7 non-P4 schools that meet the revenue requirements of the B12 or ACC.

SDSU's revenue jumped ~$38MM (57%!) this past year after the opening of their stadium and athletics success. Hope to see USF follow a similar trajectory with some sustained success these next couple of years and the stadium opening in 2027. I think we could be in the same ballpark of revenue (~100-110MM) for 27/28 with less than $10M coming from conference distributions.

I know JR has been bullish on Kansas (as a fan, I am too), but can their revenue have gone up by that percentage in one year? Donations must have come in for the football coach's (and program's) new success. I mean, they are about $1M behind Michigan, and this is a year before Michigan wins the NC in football. I hope it keeps up.

Isn’t it amazing what a competent and competitive football program can do for an athletic department?

North Texas...............$50,339,520

this is interesting and good news from a North Texas perspective. I knew UNT was set on increasing our athletic budget to match those of the top quarter of the conference, but I didn't foresee the Mean Green reaching the $50million mark for another year or so. A $60 or $65 million athletic budget within the next 5 years is now very possible.

What I also find very interesting is the rate for growth some of these programs are achieving. Here is a ranking of the growth over the last 5 years. (I couldn't find numbers for Temple or Liberty)

1. SDSU +$41million (That is incredible growth over a 5-year span and make them a prime target for any new "best-of-the-rest" conference, the PAC2 might be cooking up)
2. South Florida +$15million (Certainly an investment worthy of an AAU university, and the ACC has to be taking notice)
3. North Texas +$9million (Can this pace of growth continue? Yes, UNT has increased their annual athletic budget by $30million over the last decade)
3. Rice +$9million (Like UNT, Rice has increased their budget by $20million over the last decade)
5. Memphis +$8million (Commitment like this along with the new renovations to the liberty bowl, make the Tigers even more attractive)
6. UNLV +$6million (Solid growth and certainly a target for the PAC2, if they move to rebuild)
7. Colorado State +$5million (See UNLV)

Add Tulane in place of South Florida, and this could be the list WSU & OSU are working from. If those two are serious about rebuilding, we should know something about who they are looking at before next season starts.
