DUNBAR, W.Va. (WCHS) — Ronnie Howard is calling himself somewhat lucky. The Gino’s/Tudor’s employee said he is lucky he had just stepped out of his car before the storm - a storm that brought a giant billboard down across Fairlawn Avenue in Dunbar. However, he said he is unlucky because when the billboard came down it was his car that took the brunt of it.

It happened right by the mall on Kirby road, sign hit a trailer.

Confirmed a tornado was on Merrit's Creek, about a mile from us as the crow flies, right across the street from my dad's office.

I've been through 2 Hurricanes here in Corpus, Harvey & Hannah. We were on the east side of Harvey and got minimal damage. We only lost power for, like, 35 seconds the first day. Hannah went just south of us so we only got a lot of rain and some heavy wins but not bad.

I never imagined going through a hurricane. Never did until we moved here. I can't imagine the destruction, and fear, of a tornado because it comes, then goes, without much warning and no prep time.

Glad you are all ok and stay safe everyone.

Hurricane Mathew in 2016 tracked up the east coast so we assumed we would be safe 45 miles inland just east of Statesboro. Bad mistake. The worst of it passed through the night. Lost 7 big trees within 50 yards of the house. Power lines detached from the poles on the ground for about a mile along the road. After no sleep and counting down the minutes to get to Lowes to beat the crowed took me an hour to get a mile from the house moving debris. The next five miles to town I couldn't believe my eyes. No sign of winds. Lowes was empty. No crowd. Seemed like a normal morning. I thought the world was coming to an end for roughly 5 hours. If you get stuck in a feeder band it'll change your perspective on what a hurricane can do. Under no circumstance will we hang around again if one is in the neighborhood.

Multiple signs went down. One in Ona that hit the mobile home and one in Dunbar that fell on a car.

Yeah, I know. Wasn't sure if Green knew one went down that close to where we live and was the one I was referring to in that statement he quoted.

The Kirby Road one in Ona, was the Lion's Den billboard for the smut shop in Milton. God saw an opportunity and took it, lol.

I was confused, but I did hear about the one in Ona yesterday. It's all good.

RE: Crazy weather here
Spent the day yesterday cutting up trees at a friends home between Ona and Merritt’s creek. They had a mess with a couple trees against their house and another half dozen in their yard. At least (for them) the damage wasn’t as bad as other homes near theirs. Once it stops raining I will cut up a tree for another friend. Surprised how much damage there is in places.

Not sure if this eclipse is going to affect any of you but we're expected to have over 100k visitors in my area this weekend. Hotels sold out last fall at like 5x the regular cost for this.

Got a call from my brother in law. He lives in S Jersey and felt it.
I don't ever remember earthquakes in NJ but my husband says he remembers one from when he was little and that it did damage to a roadway about 5 miles from where we both grew up.

We will probably have more than that in LR. They've said there could be up to 1.5 million visitors in Arkansas to view this thing.

A patient was telling us yesterday to be prepared. The eclipse was going to cause the Arkansas river to flow backwards and also cause earthquakes. I'm gonna need him to show his work on that one. Biggest concern, probably, is gas stations run out of gas from all the extra people. I'm sure water, milk, bread and TP is low at the grocery stores too.

My aunt and cousin are gonna go hang out with family in Akron OH, personally I saw the one a few years back so I'll be workin' here in the dungeon :)

It certainly surprised everyone I work with! The three of us who were in one specific part of the office when it happened (one of whom is from around here) had practically convinced ourselves it was just...I don't know, someone moving a really heavy object on the floor above us or something.

Apparently they happen every so often but are usually too weak to even notice...? Just happened to be a bigger one today. Felt an aftershock almost an hour ago too. (So...I guess half of the prognostications relayed by GoBigRed26 have come true. Y'all keep an eye on the Arkansas River.)

I really do hope all of you who get to see the eclipse enjoy it. I'm a little jealous. I was surprised at how awesome I found that one in 2017 when I could be in totality in GA.

We were in totality back in October. Went out to the beach. People as far as the eye could see, in both directions.
Have to admit I was in awe.
We're gonna get 94% but, so far, the forecast isn't great. Possible rain in the AM, then cloudy.
Hoping it clears out, though.

Yeah, I think the 1.5 million is a gross overestimate. Besides hotels, there’s probably a lot of RV people too. Someone told me yesterday the RV park at Hardy, AR was already filled up and had people from California and Washington state.

It gets dark every single day in the continental latitudes. People are weird. I get checking it out if you happen to be where it's occurring, but I'd never travel to see an eclipse 01-wingedeagle

I'm sure it won't be this way for everyone, but I went into it thinking it'd probably be cool and came out of it understanding how people get obsessed with traveling to every total eclipse they can.

People around here seem to be getting real upset at the thought of all of these eclipse travellers. I'm good with it. More girls at the bars. We get a day off from work. Whats not to love about it?

Might be that I've just seen my fair share in my 55 years. But having lived in WV and Alaska I've always been surrounded by nature's wonder. I've seen many eclipses over my lifetime and they just don't move the needle for me. I agree the social aspect is probably a lot of fun, with a lot of people gathered for a common interest. I definitely have zero interest in the mystical aspects of them.

I had to travel to Oregon for work the week of the 2017 solar eclipse, to a location that had 95% coverage. I was like “that’s cool.” But it was extremely difficult to find a rental car and my flight was expensive. My company used a travel agent at the time and they managed to find me a car, but the first 4-5 places we checked were sold out due to all the people going there for the eclipse.
