Thanks and good to see you're still alive. You took it like a man when NMSU had their troubles and I need to try and do the same.

Looks like NMSU is coming back. Some good wins against UTEP, Liberty, WKU.

Thank you. I'm really hoping Hooten set a foundation this year that we can build upon. What a bizarro world we live in where NMSU FB had 2 good years in a row while BB was down.

Man!! You guys will be missed. Especially you Edinberger. The SLC is actually a fun conference so I hope you will learn to like it. I definitely understand hating to leave as I really enjoy the WAC .

Ediinburber, I will miss you too. You quickly stood out on this board when we transitioned from the SBC side.

Speaking of, we also share you feelings. Few wanted to leave. At least in this situation, there’s a lot to be excited for. I suspect you’ll elevate your programs and win a few more conference titles. Your two strengths, volleyball and baseball, will fit nicely there and the basketball squads will have a chance to compete on day 1.

The way it shaped out this year, UTRGV will make the MBB dance before nine other schools here do.

RE: Oh, the shame
I am mildly surprised by UTRGV leaving the WAC for the Southland.

Their president is very experienced, highly regarded, and knows what he is doing. He was president at Texas Tech, and has led UTRGV to new heights as a university. I didn't see him voluntarily leading a step-back, athletically, to the Southland.

But, they are adding football, which is expensive, and, even without that, there are financial limits. Both basketball teams finished last in the WAC, and, for instance, it would have taken serious investment to raise those teams up to compete at the top of the WAC.

I am sorry to see a sister UT System university depart, but respect the necessity and realism. On the bright side, to the extent there is one, this was an awkward road trip.

Edinburger, you are a great contributor and a classy guy, I hope you stay.

At first, I thought it made great sense, particularly on the travel cost side of things. But the more I thought about it, the I thought McAllen may not be the bus trip to the rest of the SLC to offset those costs.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi - 150 miles,
Incarnate Word - 225,
Houston Christian - 325,
Lamar - 425,
McNeese St - 480,
Northwestern St - 550,
Texas A&M-Commerce - 550,
Nicholls St - 650.
Southeastern Louisiana - 650.
New Orleans - 680.

The eastern Louisiana schools almost have to be a flight. A bus ride there is near ten hours. Commerce and Natchitoches are near eight hours, which is pushing it. McNeese and Lamar are roughly six-seven.

Now obviously SFA and UTA aren't close either. But I wonder who UTRGV will bring in for non-conference games. HCU, UIW and TAMCC were easy gets in all sports. Who will be the easy gets now?

Hopefully, in the end, this gives the Vaqueros a stable home and ability to grow their programs into something more competitive overall, but I'm leaning more towards Edinburger's assessment lately.

Thanks to all of you for the kind words. A "don't let the door hit you...." would've been an understandable reaction.

It's becoming clear to me that this is part of a "football is everything" mentality in our prez and AD. I'm more into other sports but I hope this works out how they hope, i.e. at least filling the 8000 seat stadium.

People around the office are already setting expectations. We've decided that scoring at all in our first FCS game or holding the other team to under 30 will be considered a victory.

This would not have happened without the football start-up. It's going to take everything you (reasonably) have to build a competitive and supported football program and to keep the cash-bleed manageable and justifiable. If it unifies the Valley for UTRGV, then maybe it will workout. Personal side comments: Games against those Louisiana schools would not excite me. I'd rather shut-down the entire athletic enterprise before doing that.

No, there's been a couple of posters that I'd say that too. One was banned, so there's that. I truly hope you still check in. Your wit operated at a high level. I still check in on the SBC board from time to time. It would be welcome here.

As for the all-sports competition, most schools that add a sport like you did tend to promise existing sports keep the same level of funding. There's a real chance UTRGV will get a greater frequency of conference championships. At our level, that's what matters most anyway.

I remember as a student at the beginning of this century (sounds old doesn't it) that most of the SLC looked down on UTPA and TA&M-CC as too far and not terribly competitive. The Islanders beat Florida State in men's basketball that opened their door. Had either one fielded a football team, they would have been in much earlier.

In some ways, it shows the benefit of the forward-thinking institution. UTA has all the ability to start a team tomorrow, but has no will. The Mavs options are limited.

Hate to see you go Edinburger. It is apparent UTRGV means a lot to you and you are a quality member of this forum. I thought UTRGV would need a growth period, but had no doubt that given the time, your University would be a fine contributing member of the WAC, carving out your own areas of excellence. The step of adding football seemed to me to validate the expectations for your future. So now go dominate those other schools and come by from time to time and let us know how it is going.

Don't know if any of you have seen the posts claiming that Mark Adams is going to be our new MBB coach:

https://biggamefishin.com/former-texas-t...utrgv-job/

I'm having a hard time believing we are going to hire back someone we fired way back in 1997. In his last season, UTPA went 3-25 and the university admitted to multiple NCAA violations including "conduct of illegal off-campus camps for basketball, free medical treatment for players and disregarding instructions by both the school and the NCAA on procedures of investigation".

Let's hope it's just a hyperactive rumor mill.

BTW, it was done quietly but Figger was out last week.

Wow, what a downer. Welcome to the have not Conference.

Good luck.

I’m hoping TAMU Commerce moves to WAC after transition.

I think they are dealing with financial issues after the move up.

No Alums I’ve talked too are happy in SLC

If they're having financial troubles why would they move to a conference that they'd need to spend more in?

I think TAMU Commerce is more Southland material and would only be a cellar dweller in the WAC but if they were the only available option than I guess we would have to take it, it would give UTA a close travel partner. WTAMU or Angelo State would be much better options than Commerce. Travel wise you would just pair ACU with WTAMU/ASU and make Tarleton and UTA travel partners. I would take UCO and Col Mesa over Commerce any day as well.
