Geez, 86 of 134 (65%) teams made a bowl game in 2023/2024…
bowl eligibility is a pretty low bar. If they were to expand the NCAA basketball tournament field to that same percentage, it would bump the bracket to the top 230 teams.

Imagine going 16-15 in basketball in the AAC and getting into the NCAA tournament. That is what bowls have become.

I've heard that when schedules were being revamped from Cincy, Houston, UCF leaving, that Memphis went to the AAC and asked to have a light home schedule for 2024 due to construction.

Well, they are both D1, FBS. Troy was actually pretty good last year, but lost their HC to Tulane.

Oh, you can actually go 4-26 and get into the NCAA tourney by virtue of winning the conference tourney. Not many do though.
Compared to bowls where they willingly invite .500 teams to come play. With over 60% of all teams needed to fill the bowl slots, it's inevitable.
You do see the difference, don't you?

Once the CFP has 24 teams with all conference champions having a home game the bowl games will be a NI tournament or they won't exist. And ND and Uconn will be looking to join a conference.
