According to folks on the Den starting LB Melique Straker has exhausted his eligibility so removed him from their roster. Big loss, but they are still my pick to win the SBC West and probably the SBC.

While you will here that they are again on of the youngest teams in FBS, and their roster will be young overall, the 2024 version of the Red Wolves will be a veteran group built to win a championship.

Not much detail about spring practices as far as players, but a few tidbits from Butch Jones has been made public.

They are putting a lot on starting QB Jaylen Raynor this spring, and it appears Butch feels he is responding well to their demands.

With touted true freshman QB Josh Flowers out with hamstring issues, Texas State transfer QB Malik Hornsby has been getting snaps at QB. While he is considered a WR they like what they are seeing and he could also get snaps as a RB.

Butch said he really like the DE's and gave transfer DE Bryan Whitehead (Liberty), a shout out. Also noted the play of returning DT starter Tim Hardiman former DE Blayne Toll on the inside.

He really likes this team, and their willingness to work. He seems to feel they they are bigger and more physical than the pasts but are still a work in progress.

Probably the biggest change over the previous Butch Jones teams this spring is the depth on the defensive front four, with more additions coming this fall.

Because of limited numbers and youth, Butch has indicated they are looking to add a QB transfer.

A-State center Jacob Bayer underwent ACL surgery yesterday. Huge loss for their OL, and probably the only player that is "irreplaceable" , at least as far as another player on their current roster filling the spot.

Per the Jonesboro Sun today Butch Jones said that true freshman Mason Myers (6-4, 290)-who Butch described as a tough player, and redshirt freshman Walker Davis (6-3, 272) out of Benton, Ar, would be getting most of the snaps at center this spring with starting guard Mehki Butler (6-3, 330) also getting a look.

Did not mention starting OT Makilan Thomas, who filled in for Bayer against Marshall last season, or last years backup center Cameron Ambrose as being in the mix.

Still holds out hope Jacob Bayer will be available in August or September.

Also said starting WR Corey Rucker (6, 210) would miss the rest of the spring, but would not require surgery.

Said they like their first 22, and will be focused on developing their reserves the rest of spring ball.

The scrimmage last Saturday, and probably for the rest of the spring appears to be developing the backups.

While he did not play yesterday highly touted Freshman QB Josh Flowers, who was expected to compete with rFr Will Prichard -who is having another solid spring, for the # two spot, is expected back at QB Tuesday, and his development will be a focus at the QB position.

In Flowers absence WR Malik Hornsby-a backup QB at Texas State and Arkansas, has gotten extended reps at QB and his ability to throw the deep ball, and explosive speed has impressed everyone. His performance, has probably guaranteed he will get game snaps as a QB this fall, and maybe RB , along with his duties as a receiver.

Linebacker is a position that needs some players to step up to provide depth behind Seniors Charles Willekes and Dane Motley. Played well as a group Saturday with Cruz Temple, and RJ Kelly making plays, along with transfers Chris Pearson (Houston) and Kyle Taylor (Tarleton St).

While their starters are solid , Jones said they need one of the other WR's to step up and transfer Reginald Harden Jr. ( Benedict College ) had a solid scrimmage.
