It'll be interesting to see if Groce sticks around after this year or looks for the best offer he can get. I believe their top 4 scorers are all Srs and he's finally going to lose the advantage of having one of the best players in school history walk into a tryout. Feels like it's shaping up to be the time to leave.

Akron fans are gearing up for him to leave regardless of how they do in the tournament.

God, I hope so! I'm tired of seeing him in our league!

So I look at it a bit differently. John Groce is one heck of a basketball coach. His personality is....well....its his.

I think that it is fair to say that his team's take on parts of his personality. The Zips are fiery, they don't get pushed around and they scratch and claw to gain an advantage over their opponent.

While those may be his "best personality traits as a coach" (and like the rest of us I know nothing about John Groce the human being), they produce some pretty good results.

I like the MAC. The MAC has a few pretty darn good coaches, John Groce being one of them. If he leaves, the MAC losses.

I haven't been in all the MAC arenas, but most of them are far better than the MACC and the JUG.

Last time I checked MAAC was 7 th oldest D1 basketball venue.
Fordham oldest and most of the others IVY league where virtually nobody
goes to games. It is an impediment to recruiting and a dump.

Tired of waiting for a redo. Unless someone wins the lottery it is not happening. Dix Stadium is getting pretty seedy also.
However Dix bathrooms are first class.

We have a great track team and NO usable outdoor track !
I, for one, don't understand our schools decision to invest so heavily in the new business building, I guess its to compete with Case and its outlandish Frank Gehry building. In any case the MAC is a Rust Belt league and Ohio is dominated by OSU. Ohio's demographic is an ageing population, some larger MAC arenas were built in early 70s to accommodate the wave of boomers. Conferences like the Sun Belt, Mountain West are in states with growing populations and a good number of young adults. Some of these lesser known schools have burgeoning enrollments and with growing tax bases can afford newer construction. The state legislature of Ohio is trying their best to kill higher ed, and small private colleges are in a fight to survive. Some have downsized, closed libraries and done other tricks to survive. KSU is doing well to hold its current enrollment. These are things I see as partial causes for MAC facilities, still not excusing the failure to rehab the MACC and Dix.

I just assume before the name plate was off the door they would hire Joyce. Haven't done any research but I assume he's regarded as a promising HC candidate. Duquesne had pretty well bottomed out. 6 wins. 280 on KenPom. Dambrot brings Joyce in as his associate HC and they're back to being a 20 win team top 130 on Kenpom the next year. Being close with a billionaire who has a lot of influence on young basketball players doesn't hurt either. Especially in the NIL world. Personally I'd rather see Groce stick around long enough for someone else to give Joyce a shot.

Great point Anti-Zip…Didn’t think of Joyce replacing Groce. Could very well happen. Having LBJ as a close friend and supporter could only help that program.

That's funny. Groce isn't even getting a sniff at that job.

Not a chance in hell Groce gets that job. My guess is they get another P6 conference coach.

I’d be shocked if that happened too. If he hadn’t failed at IL (or if he wins another NCAA tourney game) then maybe so. My guess is that he gets a better job in the A-10 or American Athletics, etc.

Agree. His failure to win even half of his conference games at Illinois will prevent him from gettin a head coaching job in the Big Ten.

I'm not going to argue with a school investing in an education facility over sports.
Saying that, if you look at Kent compared to other MAC schools in Ohio (same state funding, close to par on enrollment, rust belt) how does the MACC and even the JAR come up so short? How does Kent have to schedule money games to fund other sports, but I don't notice (or didn't hear of) other Ohio D1 schools cutting sports programs?
It really doesn't add up.

Last time I checked MAAC was 7 th oldest D1 basketball venue.
Fordham oldest and most of the others IVY league where virtually nobody
goes to games. It is an impediment to recruiting and a dump.

I'm never going to harp on a school for opting academic buildings over athletics. Especially with as shady as NCAA has been the last several years.

Nonetheless, I still don't understand how Kent has the facilities we are apparently stuck with. How are other MAC schools in Ohio (same state funding, similar enrollment, relative equal academic rigor) have the worst facilities when we've had better sucess over the past 20 years. The others don't have to opt between eliminating programs vs. scheduling multiple money games in football. The others can build newer arenas and stadiums. (I'm not talking about Akron. They fell on that sword.)
If I went back to my undergrad wen we had MAC Championships and other banners being put up in our gym and told myself this will be where this program is housed in the next few decades, I'd laugh. (Well, to be honest, I'd probably drink, but I'd laugh.) I was hoping they'd use last year's success to drive a fundraising campaign
-even if it takes another 10 years of fundraising. What do we get from it? A sticker on the floor for Superfan. Pitiful.
