Trip down memory lane...
Man, ya'll can say what you want to about Watson Brown... I know he wasn't great, and I know college football landscape has changed a ton (so the schedule and results have to be taken with a big grain of salt). butttt, in 2003 UAB finished 5-7..

won AT Baylor
won AT Memphis
beat Cincy at home
lost by 3 at TCU
lost by 3 at Georgia
won AT USF.

There's obviously some duds in there (losing at home to USM and Troy were back breaking), losing to 2 TDs to Tulane at home (can't remember if they were any good), and getting doubled up 28-56 losing at Houston in the last game of the season.

But there are some impressive wins in there too. And what really stands out to me is the quality of the schedules we used to play.. Wow.. This is obviously before Baylor, Cincy, Memphis, TCU, etc., had their time in the sun, but still..

It's also just plain sad to see how stuck in the mud, or worse, UAB has been as an overall athletics program the last 20 years. So many teams have passed us by. Now 2nd and third rate schools are looking to do the same (FAU, etc.). This should be unacceptable for a school like UAB...

2003 was my first year as a student. I was in band that year. I was engaged in athletics, but didn't follow sports, especially football, as closely as I do now. In my head I just remember us not being very good, but going to Memphis and beating them.. Bc that was the band's road trip that year.

RE: Trip down memory lane...
2003 was two years after the first “death penalty” from the BoT where they invited a bunch of journalists to a BoT meeting and ambushed UAB by telling us and the world they were shutting the football program down in two years. Two of the worst recruiting classes in UAB history resulted from that announcement and other teams were showing recruits the newspaper clippings saying we were going to be shut down for years afterwards and telling recruits to not believe the UAB coaches unless they could produce the news stories showing the BoT had changed their mind and that football ways staying. Of course UAB couldn’t produce that because the BoT never publicly walked back from their threat to kill the program.

DHack got hurt in that Baylor game.

That team was gutsy.

Yes, Tulane was good that year. DHack missed that game.

Wasn’t it the TCU game where he hurt his thumb? We were playing well up to that point @ TCU.

RE: Trip down memory lane...
If I remember correctly, there was a young man by the name of Roddy White who had a pretty good game receiving that evening (particularly in the second half).

DHack’s reputation stands on its own merit and he was a young man of good character, as most of us already know.

I was equally impressed with RB Trey Chaney. The man wasn’t tall but he packed a lot of muscle on that frame and ran with a lot of heart.

But what I remember most about that game was BlazerDawg becoming my all-time hero by delivering a Milo’s hamburger ‘survival kit’ all the way out to the game for some chump he didn’t even know. What a great way to meet a fellow Blazer!

Memories indeed!

Yeah you are right — mixing up my Texas teams.

Hack did get hurt against Baylor, but then came back in at the end and threw the long touchdown to Nick Coon to win the game.

We were there along with my grandson ( now USMC Corporal ) and congratulated the team as they were treated with some pizza after the game.

I remember strangely enough I was at a Miss. State game (think they were playing Memphis - MSU (clanga) won) - my wife has a cousin who was going there at the time, so we visited her every now and then and got tix to the game - why not? ...remember coming back to her place and hearing the final minute of the Baylor game - Gary (at least I THINK it was Gary... not sure if Starkvegas picked up the radio network, but I remember it being on radio...) went bonkers! (well, as did I) 02-13-banana03-lmfao ...then next year we stomped a mudhole in them at LF, so 2-0 lifetime against the Bears...
