RE: East Carolina Pirates
We're only favored in 3 of our final 13 games. If we can just somehow manage a winning record over these last 13 it would be great. Stealing a win against FAU and/or Memphis would make this season way more satisfying. It all starts Tuesday at Charlotte. I know they've been playing well above expectations but I feel that's a game we should win.

I noticed that when we ran offense and nothing was working that the team would find EG with a few seconds left on shot clock. He assessed the situation and did what he could to salvage the possession. I didn't chart it but I noticed it a couple of times. Tough on your shooting percentages.

That’s true for a small sample size. But he’s a TWENTY % (literally 20 on the dot) shooter from 3 over the entire season. He’s well below 40% from the field for the entire season. He should not have the highest shot attempts on the team or be the player the team looks to to create a shot in late clock situations. The team is so much better when he is limiting his shot attempts and creating for others

Earlier this season the team looked lost when EG was out of the lineup. Glad to see that has improved. I still worry about those frantic moments late in the game, as in last season, when we were a TO machine. EG is our best ball handler in those moments and he definitely wants the ball and he has the confidence to lead the team.

I want the ball in Butta’s hands in those situations. EG may have the confidence, but it feels like every time he’s been in that situation he has done the most reckless thing possible.

RE: East Carolina Pirates
What’s up w JD? He had four straight games scoring double digits with 5, 4, 2, 11 rebounds (last was a double-double of course). He did score 14 against ECU with 9 rebounds, but he’s not the intimidating force he was early this season.

He’s a 3rd big type of player. He’s not meant to start at this level. If you can’t run and you can’t catch lobs or bounce pass, it’s going to be hard to get a rhythm against conference foes that know they can survive off Zone D when he’s in. My opinion, ain’t worth much.

RE: East Carolina Pirates
JD is an extremely limited player. He’s good at what he’s good at, but can do almost literally nothing else. No jumper, no floater, no sky hook like Trey, struggles to pass out of the double team, not athletic enough to catch lobs or finish through bigger big men.
Being that limited becomes much easier to defend as the season goes on and teams get more film on us.
That being said he’s a very good back to the basket big man, he’s just very limited. He may get more one on one looks in the post if we keep shooting better from outside and our offense is more dynamic with multiple other players contributing

RE: East Carolina Pirates
JD is awesome at offensive rebounding and drawing free throws, both metrics he ranks in the top 50 of all players on KenPom. I've noticed that he's very easy to switch on and get the desired matchup for the opposing team. The Drake game was painfully obvious, especially in the first half, that they were targeting a switch to put DeVries on JD, and it's why he had like 16 points in the first half.
It's kind of weird but he might be my favorite player on the team this season. He's been able to draw fouls the whole time, but he clearly put work in this offseason to practice FTs and is shooting 75% from the line, up from ~66% last season.

He’s a good player, and really good at what he’s good at, like I said. He is just very limited, and can still be a liability on defense like you point out.
He has definitely improved his ft shooting and his body and conditioning

RE: East Carolina Pirates
JD has strengths and his hard work makes him one of my favorite players. He is a big body who can score and rebound, and he is very, very important to this team because UAB doesn't have a lot of that.
Offensively, JD's game is throwback. He'd be an ideal back-to-the-basket post player in 1980s/90s schemes. Today, versatility is valued a lot more. JD isn't going to create his own shot or stretch the defense so he's dependent on others getting him the ball. That can be schemed against, as we have seen after the first few games. To get him going, he's gotta get more than his share of offensive rebounds and get to the free throw line.
He's a decent defender in the post one on one. But his athletic and skill limitations are what they are. You can exploit him with a big man who can put it on the floor, and you can exploit him on switches to get him matched up with a forward or guard. He can be foul prone and the refs for whatever reason also over-officiate on him and call a lot of ticky-tack things against him. But some of that also comes from him getting caught in tough matchups. Refs tend to protect the smaller guys and penalize the bigger guys for reaching.
